WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University track & field team competed at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. The meet is a two-day competition hosted by Princeton University. The men posted six times that qualify for the postseason while the women posted 10.
The women's 1500m was flooded with Hoyas as five of the six representing the Blue & Gray finished in the top seven. Senior Christine Whalen (Los Gatos, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) was the first Hoya to cross the finish line with a second-place time of 4:23.73, an NCAA Regional qualifying time. Classmate Avril Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Beaconsfield) was next to finish in third (4:24.54), followed by junior Lauren Gregory (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) in fifth (4:26.22) and graduate student Carmen Ballard (Kelowna, British Columbia/Columbia) in sixth (4:27.11) - all three are NCAA Regional qualifying marks. Freshman Katie McCafferty (Convent Station, N.J./Oak Knoll) qualified for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships with her seventh-place performance (4:27.90) while freshman Lauren Borduin (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) finished 14th (4:32.82) to record a BIG EAST qualifying time. Whalen and Ballard added to their postseason repertoires with the NCAA Regional marks while Ogrodnick and Gregory had previously qualified for the championship meet.
Running unattached as a redshirt, senior Natasha LaBeaud (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) took first place in the 5000m with a time of 16:31.47, a time that is considered an NCAA qualifying time. Junior Kelsey Malmquist (Wallston Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) finished third as she clocked in at 17:10.93 to qualify for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. Following up were senior Lise Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Beaconsfield) in fifth (17:14.21) and sophomore Laura Gallo (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) in eighth place (17:26.08), both qualifying for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships.
For the men, junior Alex Bean (Somers, N.Y./Somers) finished ninth in the 800m, timing in at 1:51.35 to qualify for the BIG EAST and IC4A Championships. Freshman Theon O'Connor (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion College) finished 12th with a time of 1:51.54 to also qualify for BE and IC4A.
Senior Mike Krisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) was 10th in the men's 1500m and qualified for the BIG EAST and IC4A Championships, clocking in at 3:49.00. Junior Sandy Roberts (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) and senior Justin Scheid (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXII) finished 15th (3:51.26) and 17th (3:51.47), respectively, to qualify for the BIG EAST Championships.
Running unattached, senior Alex Mason (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) finished seventh in the 3000m steeplechase, timing in at 9:09.86. The time is considered a BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying mark.
