PHILADELPHIA - On a sunny and breezy day in Philadelphia, the Georgetown University track & field team completed its first day of competition at the 115th Penn Relay Carnival at historic Franklin Field. In the first collegiate relay of the night, senior All-American Maggie Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) ran a brave anchor leg as the Hoyas fell just shy of Tennessee in the distance medley relay championship to take second place with a time of 11:02.85. This same GU quartet earned All-America honors at the NCAA Championships earlier this year.
In her first time competing in the Penn Relays representing the Blue & Gray, freshman All-American Emily Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) got off to a brilliant start and was second to Tennessee's Phoebe Wright through 600 meters but Duke's Molly Iheman made a play for first as the Blue Devils took over after the first exchange as Infeld recorded a 3:22.2 split. Junior All-American Abigail Johnson (Willingboro, N.J./Milton Hershey [Pa.]) challenged Duke's Brittany Whitehead on the final turn as the Hoyas took first place through the second handoff with a split of 54.4 as junior All-American Renee Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) picked up the third leg. Tomlin's efforts were stifled when Tennessee's Chanelle Price ran a 2:04.5 split to take first place. Maggie Infeld, with the toughest task of the four in competing against Tennessee's Sarah Bowman, was steady at second through the bulk of her leg. A brave attempt around the final turn fell just shy of Bowman as the Hoyas took second place, despite Maggie splitting 4:39.8 to Bowman's 4:40.7. The time ranks second on the all-time GU list, the record (11:01.40) was set at the 1997 Penn Relays.
A race full of Hoyas, senior Mike Krisch (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins) was 80 meters from the finish line when Army's John Anderson and California (Pa.)'s Chris Clark passed him off the last turn to take first and second, respectively with Krisch finishing third with a PR of 14:00.71. Senior All-American Levi Miller (Belfast, Maine/Belfast Area) finished 16th, timing in at 14:16.18, followed by senior All-American Daniel Nunn (San Luis Obispo, Calif./San Luis Obispo) in 21st place (14:22.71) and sophomore T.C. Lumbar (Edina, Minn./Edina) in 27th (14:43.36).
In her first Penn Relays donning the blue and gray, freshman Katie McCafferty (Convent Station, N.J./Oak Knoll) took fourth place in the women's 3000m with a time of 9:37.34.
In the women's 4x400m relay heats, Georgetown finished 15th overall with a time of 3:46.21. Junior Sarah Wernik (Florence, Mass./Northampton) led off and kept the Hoyas in seventh as she handed off to freshman London Finley (Los Angeles, Calif./St. Mary's Academy). Finley maintained and even pulled the Hoyas up to sixth place during her carry as she handed off to sophomore Deidra Sanders (Memphis, Tenn./Eastern). Graduate student Erika Moses (Redlands, Calif./Columbia) ran the anchor leg as the Hoyas took 15th in the heats.
Redshirt Natasha LaBeaud (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) took third place overall in the women's 5000m - Olympic Development section. She maintained second through a bulk of the race but fell to third with just one lap to go, timing in at 16:25.96.
