WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Georgetown University track & field team completed its first day of competition at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va., hosted by the College of William & Mary. The Hoyas posted two NCAA Regional qualifying times and return for the final day of competition tomorrow.
In the women's 800m, the field was dominated by the Blue & Gray as five of the top six represented GU. Senior All-American Maggie Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) added to her postseason repertoire as she took first place with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 2:07.96. She was followed by fellow All-American, junior Renee Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) who also qualified for the NCAA Regional with a time of 2:08.21. Junior Christine Whalen (Los Gatos, Calif./Archbishop Mitty) finished fourth with a time of 2:10.06 to qualify for both the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships while Maggie's sister and All-American, freshman Emily Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) took fifth with a time of 2:10.23, also qualifying for both the BE and ECAC Championships. Senior Avril Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Beaconsfield) recorded a BIG EAST time as she clocked in at 2:12.54 to finish sixth.
After her honor as the BIG EAST female track athlete of the week, junior Lauren Gregory (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) finished third in the 1500m (4:32.25) to qualify for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships in the event. Graduate student Carmen Ballard (Kelowna, British Columbia/Columbia) followed up with a fourth-place showing (4:29.50), followed by freshman Lauren Borduin (Colombia, Mo./Rock Bridge) in sixth (4:33.43), junior Kelsey Malmquist (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep) in eighth (4:36.86) and senior Lise Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Quebec/Beaconsfield) in 10th (4:37.63) - all are BIG EAST qualifying times.
The Hoya sprinters continue to excel this season as was evident in the men's 110m hurdles with senior Terrell Gissendanner (Rochester, N.Y./Edison Tech) finishing fourth with a time of 14.66, followed by freshman Biyerem Ogenkwu (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway Township) close behind with a sixth-place time of 14.71. Both qualified for the BE and IC4A Championships.
In the men's 200m, sophomore Sean Suber (Mitchellville, Md./DeMatha) ran an IC4A and BIG EAST qualifying time to take third overall (21.42).
Junior All-American Sandy Roberts (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) qualified for the postseason in the 1500m with a sixth-place showing, timing in at 3:50.87, a BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying time.
Freshman London Finley (Los Angeles, Calif./St. Mary's Academy) finished sixth in the 100m hurdles as she recorded a BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying time of 14.38. In the 400m, Finley recorded a BIG EAST qualifying time as she clocked in at 57.21.
Graduate student Liam Boylan-Pett (Bath, Mich./Columbia) was the first of a trio of Hoyas to finish in the top 10 of the 800m run. His time of 1:50.79 sends him to the BIG EAST and IC4A Championships as he took first place. Freshman Theon O'Connor (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion College) placed third (1:52.64) while junior Alex Bean (Somers, N.Y./Somers) finished seventh (1:53.27), both are BIG EAST qualifying times.
In the women's 100m dash preliminary heats, junior Sarah Wernik (Florence, Mass./Northampton) timed in at 12.11 to qualify for the finals tomorrow in addition to qualifying for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships. Wernik added to her postseason when she finished fifth in the 200m with a time of 24.92, the time is a BIG EAST qualifying mark. Junior All-American Abigail Johnson (Willingboro, N.J./Milton Hershey [Pa.]) was seventh in the event as she timed in at 25.00.
Senior Tom McCoubrey (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) posted a BIG EAST qualifying mark in the shot put (14.79m) to take eighth place overall.
The Hoyas continue competition at the Colonial Relays tomorrow, April 4.
