FAIRFAX, Va. - The Georgetown University track & field team turned in a strong showing at the Father Diamond Invitational at George Mason University in the squad's second indoor meet of the 2009-2010 season. The Hoyas recorded first place finishes in six events, showing especially strong in the men's and women's middle and long distance events.
Junior Ayalew Taye (Portland, Maine/Cushing Academy) took the top spot in the men's one mile run in a time of 4:15.21, closely followed by sophomore Mark Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyertown), who finished in 4:15.23, just two-hundredth of a second behind Taye.
The Hoyas men proved as dominant in the 3000 meter run taking the top three spots. Senior Sandy Roberts (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) led the way, finishing in 8:19.11. Senior Levi Miller (Belfast, Maine/Belfast Area) with a time of 8:24.86 and freshman Bobby Peavey (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) with a time of 8:29.18 finished second and third respectively. In the men's 1000 meter run, graduate student Alex Mason (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy Prep) won with a time of 2:28.60, while senior Alex Bean (Somers, N.Y./Somers) finished second in 2:28.74.
Graduate student Avril Ogrodnick (Beaconsfield, Que./Beaconsfield) finished in second place in the women's 1000 meter run in 2:53.01, while sophomore Lauren Borduin (Columbia, Mo./Rock Bridge) finished third in 2:57.63. The race was won by former Hoya Maggie Infeld, running unattached, finishing in 2:51.01. In the women's 3000 meter run junior Laura Gallo (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) finished second in a time of 10:31.02.
Senior Abigail Johnson (Willingboro, N.J./Milton Hershey[Pa.]) won the 400 meter dash in a time of 56.02. Johnson came back seven events later to finish second in the 200 meter dash in 25.37.
Georgetown took the top two spots in the men's 800 meter run, as senior Dan Leyh (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) won in a time of 1:54.80, while freshman Brian Hencke (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) finished in 1:55.20, good for second place. Sophomore Biyerem Okengwu (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway Township) qualified with a preliminary time of 8.26 in the men's meter dash, the second best qualifying time. Okengwu improved his time to 8.08 in the final, but finished just one one-hundredth of a second behind Norfolk State Aramis Massenburg (8:07).
After recording a qualifying with the fourth-highest time of 7.75 in the women's 60 meter dash, freshman Tenil Stoudenmire (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) won the finals in 7.62.
Junior Tanore Barrow (New Haven, Conn./James Hillhouse) finished in second place in the women's shot put with a throw of 12.54 meters.
