Racing on the course that will host this year's national championship and facing some of the toughest competition all season, the Georgetown men's and women's cross country teams turned in outstanding performances at the Pre-National Meet, hosted by Indiana State University Saturday.
The women's team, led by sophomore Emily Jones (Harvard, Mass./Broomfield) with a fifth place finish, placed three runners among the top-20 overall and finished first among 40 teams, On the men's side, senior Ayalew Taye (Portland, Maine/Cushing Academy) finished in 14th place as GU placed sixth among 36 teams.
"For such a young team, I thought we had several really good races and lot of solid races," Director of Track & Field & Cross Country Patrick Henner said. "For their first big meet, it was a good result. I think when you come to a big meet like this with a young and inexperienced team, it's easy for things to go bad. We made a few mistakes, but they guys continued to work hard and were able to produce a good finish."
Taye was the top finisher for the Hoyas, finishing in 14th place among 241 runners. He covered the 8,000-meter course in 24:02.3.
Georgetown had three runners finish among the top-30 overall, with senior T.C. Lumbar (Edina, Minn./Edina) placing 27th place in 24:16.5 and sophomore Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly High School) just behind in 28th place in 24:16.6.
Senior Alex Bean (Somers, N.Y./Somers) was the fourth runner across the line for the Hoyas, finishing in 65th place in 24:43.9, while sophomore Bobby Peavey (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam), running his first race of the season, placed 77th in 24:50.0.
"That was kind of where we projected him (Taye) to finish," Henner said. "He maybe went out a little too hard, but we were pleased with his finish. T.C. and Springer both had really good races and we were happy to see that result. Bobby, for his first big race, had a great result. He may have gone out a bit too hard, but he had a great last thousand meters and made up about 20 places."
Freshman Tyler Anyan (Snellville, Ga./Brookwood) finished in 94th place in 24:57.4 and freshman Evan Bloomberg (East Northport, N.Y./East Northport) placed 100th in 25:06.6.
In the men's open race, senior James Grimes (Chatham, N.J./Chatham), running his first race of the season, finished in fifth place In 24:47.7, while sophomore Ben Furcht (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) placed 18th in 25;34 and junior Brian Manning (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) placed 85th in 26:56.8,
The men's team will be off until Saturday, Oct. 30, when the team travels to Syracuse for the BIG EAST Championship.
"We have to keep focusing on running good team races," Henner said. "We keep getting better and I think we can improve a lot in the next two weeks and down the road."
