WASHINGTON - Aided by four runners finishing among the top-10 overall, the Georgetown women's cross country team finished in second place at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional, while senior Ayalew Taye (Portland, Maine/Cushing Academy) won the individual title on the men's side to lead the Hoyas to a third-place finish in the race, held in State College, Pa.
The Hoya women's team, ranked fifth in the country, punched their ticket to the NCAA Championship with a second place finish, tallying 40 points. Villanova won the team title with 29 points.
Led by junior Emily Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont), the Blue and Gray put four runners among the top-10 and had all seven of the team's runners finish among the top-30 overall. Infeld covered the 6K course in 19:50.
Sophomore Emily Jones (Harvard, Mass./Broomfield) finished in seventh place in 20:22, while freshman Madeline Chambers (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat) finished in eighth place in 20:24 and freshman Joana Stevens (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) took ninth in 20:30.
Other Hoya finishers included graduate student Renee Tomlin (Ocean, City, N.J./Ocean City), who finished in 14th place in 20:42, sophomore Kirsten Kasper (North Andover, Mass./North Andover), who placed 17th in 20:59 and junior Katie McCafferty (Convent Station, N.J./Oak Knoll), who finished in 28th place in 21:36.
On the men's side, Taye claimed the individual title on the 10,000-meter course, giving Georgetown individual wins in the NCAA Regional for the second-straight year. He finished in first place in 30:05.
The Hoyas finished in third place as a team, tallying 78 points. Princeton finished in first with 53 points, while Villanova was second with 61 points.
Sophomore Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly High School) finished in 11th place in 30:27, while sophomore Mark Denin (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyerstown) took 18th place in 30:46.
The other scorers for the Hoyas were sophomore Ben Furcht (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion), who placed 23rd in 31:01, and senior T.C. Lumbar (Edina, Minn./Edina), who placed 25th in 31:01.
Senior James Grimes (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished in 29th place in 31;08 and sophomore Bobby Peavey (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) took 32nd in 31:15.
The Hoyas, who won the BIG EAST title in 2008, will be seeking their seventh BIG EAST Championship.
