WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University cross country program had 12 student-athletes named All-Mid-Atlantic Region as announced by U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association today. Five men and seven women were named All-Region today, one day after it was announced that both teams were selected to compete at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.
On the women's side, five-time All-American Emily Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) was the lone Hoya on the list of seven to have previously garnered All-America accolades in cross country. The junior finished in second place at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional with a time of 19:50. Sophomore Emily Jones (Harvard, Mass/Bromfield), who last year competed at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, joined Infeld on the list as Jones was the second Hoya to cross the finish line on Saturday with a time of 20:22, enough for second place. Freshman Madeline Chambers (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat) and Joanna Stevens (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) finished eighth (20:24) and ninth (20:30), respectively, on Saturday and also made the list of honorees. Rounding out the list were two-time All-American Renee Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City), Kirsten Kasper (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) and Katie McCafferty (Convent Station, N.J./Oak Knoll).
For the men, Ayalew Taye (Portland, Maine/Cushing Academy) has led the charge this season as he took first place in the individual race on Saturday and was named All-Region today. Taye is the most experienced student-athlete on a very young men's team. Taye's time of 30:05 in the men's 10,000-meter race (4:51 pace) was enough for first place overall while four other Hoyas finished in the top-25 - all of them earning All-Region accolades. Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly), Mark Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyerstown), Ben Furcht (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) and TC Lumbar (Edina, Minn./Edina) finished 11th (30:27), 18th (30:46), 23rd (31:01) and 25th (31:01), respectively.
With a second-place finish at the Mid-Atlantic Regional, the women's team earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Cross Country Championships. The men's cross country program was selected to the Championships with one of 13 at-large bids.
The 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships will be held on November 22 at the LaVern Gibson Championships Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind., and hosted by Indiana State University. The women's race will begin at approximately 12:08 p.m. EST followed by the men's race at approximately 12:48 p.m., with a live webcast available on NCAA.com, starting at noon.
