WASHINGTON - Though the official announcement from U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) will not be made until Sunday afternoon, it is almost certain that Emily Infeld will leave the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., as a five-time All-American as just a sophomore. The two-day event held at the Randal Tyson Track Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, came to a close tonight with Infeld competing in the women's 3,000-meter run, the final individual event of the championships.
As the 3,000 commenced, it took less than the first 1,000 meters to see that there were three teams competing in their own race while the remainder of the field chased. Through the first half of the race, Infeld competed in a steady manner, staying nestled in the top four of the chase pack. As the gap widened in the chase pack, Infeld stayed toward the front but the kick with two laps to go proved a little much for Infeld as she slipped to eighth overall with a time of 9:13.22.
USTFCCCA mandates that All-America honors will be given to those who finish in the top eight overall in their event. Without question, Infeld's eighth-place performance tonight paired with anchoring the third-place women's distance medley relay last night, Infeld leaves Fayetteville as a five-time All-American. What is more impressive is that while Infeld adds to her resume with another two All-America honors, she has made certain that her name will be in the GU record books for a long time to come. Her split in last night's distance medley relay, 4:33.5, is the fastest 1600-meter carry in Georgetown history.
In the women's 4x400-meter relay, the Hoyas took 11th place overall with a time of 3:44.13. Competing in the first of three heats, the Hoyas have certainly ran a sharper race but a bit of confusion at the third exchange with the anchor from Mississippi never having full control of the baton surely slowed GU down a bit.
