WASHINGTON - Five Georgetown student-athletes earned All-Academic status by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). To garner All-Academic status, a student-athlete must have a GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and placed high at the most recent NCAA Championships. Both the men's and women's cross country squads earned All-Academic team status for the 2010 season.
Sophomore All-American Emily Jones (Harvard, Mass./Bromfield) finished 29th at the Cross Country NCAA Championship on Nov. 22, 2010. Her time in the 6,000-meter run was 20:42.3, helping the women's team finish fourth overall. Graduate student and three-time All-American Renee Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) finished at 20:46.3. Rounding out the 2010 Division I Cross Country All-Academic honorees is freshman Joanna Stevens (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) who finished with a time of 21:43.2.
The men's honorees include sophomore Andrew Springer (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) and junior Mark Dennin (Gilbertsville, Pa./Boyerstown) who finished 11th (30:27) and 18th (30:46), respectively, at the 2010 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional where the Georgetown men took third place, led by Ayalew Taye (Portland, Maine/Cushing Academy) who won the individual crown.
The women's team finished fourth overall at the 2010 NCAA Championships, led by Emily Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont), who was GU's first-ever NCAA Runner-Up. Women's cross country is one of 192 teams to earn All-Academic status, and finished the 2010 season. The men's team finished 29th overall at the 2010 NCAA Championships and was one of 152 teams with All-Academic status.
Prior to the NCAA Championships, the women's cross country team placed second at the BIG EAST Championships and second at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals. Jones, Tomlin and Stevens all finished in the top 20 at the BIG EAST Championships and at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals.
The men's team placed sixth at the BIG EAST Championships and third at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regionals. Springer finished 43rd at the BIG EAST Championships and 11th in the Mid-Atlantic Regionals, while Dennin placed 18th.
The BIG EAST Indoor Championships are up next for the Hoyas on Saturday, Feb. 19 and Sunday, Feb. 20 in Akron, Ohio.
