WASHINGTON - Hoya runners are no stranger to Coxe Cage on Yale's campus - two GU runners ran sub-four miles in back-to-back years in 2008 and 2009 (seven-time All-American Andrew Bumbalough and All-American Liam Boylan-Pett) and GU names are splashed across the Giegengack Invitational meet records. To see four Georgetown names in the top five in the men's mile is a familiar feeling. There was no sub-four mile on Saturday but Ayalew Taye did take home the individual crown. In addition to the crop of men's middle distance and distance runners who traveled to New Haven, Conn., for the Giegengack Invitational, a crew of athletes also competed on the final day of the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the Armory in New York, N.Y.
Taye led the pack in the mile with a time of 4:05.62 followed by Dylan Sorensen in second (4:08.06) and Billy Ledder in fourth (4:10.51) and Bobby Peavey in fifth (4:11.82). All were BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying times. The GU competitors in the men's mile typically specialize in longer distances but put forth a stellar performance in the mile, making it look more like a Georgetown practice than a race.
In the men's 800-meter run, Toby Ulm was the star as he won the race timing in at 1:49.81. Brian Hencke followed in fifth with a time of 1:51.88 followed by All-American John Maloy in sixth (1:52.73) and Theon O'Connor in ninth (1;53.47). Rounding out the top 10 finishers was Dany Leyh who ran a 1:54.16. All were BIG EAST and IC4A qualifying times.
Back at the Armory, the women's middle distance was having a solid showing as well as All-American Rachel Schneider took third place in the women's mile, championship division with a time of 4:44.58. Lauren Borduin also competed, finishing seventh (4:49.94) - both were BE and ECAC qualifying times.
Becca DeLoache and Emily Menges ran times of 2:11.53 and 2:11.74 in the women's 800-meter run (Championship), respectively, with both times qualifying for the postseason in the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships.
In the college section of the women's 800-meter run, Shanique Dasilva ran a 2:13.30 to qualify for the BIG EAST and ECAC Championships while three-time All-American Renee Tomlin finished fourth in the open division with a time of 2:07.90. Tomlin competed unattached in the event.
Katie McCafferty shined in the women's 3,000-meter run with a third-place 9:26.48, enough to qualify for the postseason. Joining her in the postseason will be Amanda Kimbers who ran a 24.31 in the women's 200-meter dash, championship division.
Kimbers teamed up with Chelsea Cox, London Finley and Deidra Sanders to run an ECAC-qualifying 3:43.90 in the women's 4x400-meter relay. Eghosa Aghayere continued to represent Georgetown in the men's triple jump with a mark of 13.56.
The Hoyas will continue compete one last weekend before the championship portion of the schedule with the Washington Husky Invitational this Friday and Saturday, February 11-12. The Hoyas will travel to Akron, Ohio for the BIG EAST Championships on February 19-20.
