WASHINGTON - On a rainy night in Des Moines, Iowa, Emily Infeld (University Heights, Ohio/Beaumont) added her second NCAA Runner Up finish to her repertoire this year. Once again, the BIG EAST Conference took one and two as Infeld finished second with a time of 15:38.23, a new school record. The third night of the four-day championships held at Drake Stadium saw another familiar race between BIG EAST competitors Infeld and Villanova's Sheila Reid who won the event with a time of 15:37.50, less than a second faster than Infeld.
Running an incredibly smart race, Infeld stayed back for the majority of the race remaining in the top half of the runners through 3,000 meters. With 1,200 meters to go, Infeld made a solid move on the outside staying in fourth place. With 800 meters to go, Infeld kept the company of Reid and Oregon's Jordan Hasay as the trio separated themselves from the remainder of the field. On bell lap, Infeld stayed inside on the first turn but got boxed in on the back straight forcing her to take the outside on the final turn, passing Hasay on the outside. With the race coming down to Reid and Infeld yet again, Infeld came up on the straight but had started her stride early whereas Reid could start her kick down the final straightaway.
Her second-place time of 15:38.23 bests her previous PR by more than 17 seconds (15:55.50) and is a new school record, faster than Suzanne Girard's record set in 1984 (15:45.86).
The Hoyas continue competition tomorrow, June 11, at Drake Stadium with All-Americans Renee Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) and Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) competing in the women's 1,500-meter finals slated for 1:18 p.m., ET.
The final day of the NCAA Track & Field Championships will be televised live on CBS on Saturday from 1-3 p.m., ET.
