WASHINGTON - Today was the first day of competition at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held in Des Moines, Iowa, and just like the remaining three days of competition - there will be a Hoya competing on the track. Today is the first day of the four-day event held at Drake Stadium where six Hoyas traveled from the District to the heart of the Midwest to the Hawkeye State.
All-American and Penn Relays Champion Chelsea Cox (Manahakin, N.J./Southern Regional) competed in the second of three heats in the women's 800-meter semifinal. Cox failed to advance to the finals as the field will be comprised of the top two times from each heat plus the next two times.
The Hoyas continue competition with the semifinal of both the women's 1,500-meter run and the men's 110-meter hurdles tomorrow, June 9, in Des Moines. The first event will be the women's 1,500 with the start time slated for 7 p.m., ET, with All-Americans Renee Tomlin (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City), Rachel Schneider (Dover, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Madeline Chambers (Rocky River, Ohio/Magnificat) competing in both heats. The men's 110 hurdles will start at 8:10 p.m., ET, with All-American Chris Kinney (Stockbridge, Ga./Stockbridge) competing in the second of the three-heat semifinal.
A videostream covering the event can be accessed on www.ncaa.com all day tomorrow and throughout competition on Friday and Saturday when the championships are not being televised. Friday's television schedule is 7:30-9:30 p.m., ET, on CBS Sports Network (cable) while the event will be televised on CBS on Saturday from 1-3 p.m., ET.
