– The Georgetown University field hockey team closed out the 2018 season on Friday afternoon at Cooper Field in a 4-1 loss to No. 5 UConn. GU finished the season 11-7 overall and 2-5 in the BIG EAST Conference. The team's 11 wins marks the first time since the 2001 season that the Hoyas have won over 10 games in a single season and since the squad has finished with an over .500 record. With the win, UConn moves to 15-3 overall and 7-0 in the BIG EAST.
In the seventh minute of play, the defending National Champions notched the first goal of the contest from leading scorer, Cecile Pieper. Just eight minutes later, UConn buried a goal past goalkeeper Ciara Weets
(Springfield, Va. / Lake Braddock Secondary) despite her diving efforts giving the Huskies a 2-0 advantage.
The GU defense held off a barrage of shots in the last 10 minutes of the half including an on-the-line team save cleared by Anna Farley
(Bel Air, Md. / Bel Air). The Huskies outshot the Hoyas 10-0 in the half and Weets made four saves.
Just 26 seconds into the second half, the Hoyas were awarded a penalty stroke after Jax van der Veen
(Exton, Pa. / The Agnes Irwin School) was fouled in front of the cage. Sydney Stephenson
(Bel Air, Md. / Bryn Mawr School) stepped up to the line and converted on a shot to the left of goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher to cut the Husky lead in half 2-1.
The Hoya defense gave up two more goals in the final 13 minutes of play for a final score of 4-1. Weets tallied six additional saves in the second half for a career-high 10 saves and defended the Huskies' 11 total penalty corners in the match.
