Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 24 Georgetown Falls to St. John’s

WASHINGTON – The No. 24 Georgetown University men's soccer squad fell in its regular season home finale and Senior Day on Saturday, 1-0, to the St. John's University Red Storm (7-6-3, 3-2-3 BIG EAST) at Cooper Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup.  The game was moved from Shaw Field due to inclement field conditions.  With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 9-4-3 overall and 5-2-1 in conference play with one game remaining.

"Playing on Cooper, which is only 70 yards wide and turf, it was going to come down to a setpiece or two and in the end it just wasn't our day," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese.  "We've been playing really well, I like what we're doing and I'm upset that today's conditions turned this into something that wasn't beneficial for our style."

The Hoyas dominated possession in the first 15 minutes as the Blue & Gray spent almost the entirety on offense.  Despite the possession, GU only generated a few dangerous looks as SJU packed it in against the Hoyas.  It was St. John's that generated one of the best looks as a shot from 15 was sent to the far post but freshman goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis (Athens, Greece / Nea Genia Zirdi) laid out to make the stop.

The difference came in the 44th minute as a shot from the left side was saved by Nikopolidis.  He had jumped up to make the save and the rebound went right to the back post and a waiting Sanoussi Sangary who headed it back in to make it 1-0.  That score would stand as the squads went into the break.

As the second half began, Georgetown searched for the equalizer.  Early on, SJU keeper Lenny Wilson came out to make a huge stop on sophomore forward Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley ), and the rebound found the head of junior forward Achara (Enugu, Nigeria / Berkshire School [Mass.]) but his shot on the open net sailed high.

Georgetown battled the Red Storm, but found few chances until late when the Hoyas pushed forward trying to find the back of the net.  A shot on a second empty net went high and every opportunity was stopped by the compact Red Storm defense on the small field.  At the end of 90 minutes, the Blue & Gray could not find the answer falling, 1-0.

The Hoyas outshot the Red Storm, 14-8, and took six corner kicks to St. John's four.  Wilson had seven saves and took the victory, while Nikopolidis was given the loss with four saves on the afternoon.

The Hoyas will close out the regular season on Wednesday as the squad travels to No. 19 Creighton for the BIG EAST finale.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Omaha, Nebraska.  The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
