WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team shut out the University of Maryland Terrapins (4-4-3) in a 0-0 scoreless draw Monday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the tie, the Hoyas close out nonconference play with a record of 4-2-2 and move to 6-3-3 overall.
"We're both playing well enough in a lot of ways and we're both having trouble finding that little offensive pop," said Georgetown Head Coach
Brian Wiese. "You saw the tempo drop. The legs were gone, the sharpness of the passing was gone, but the issue for us is to find out why we aren't more dangerous. I think the answer will be that we weren't quite patient enough."
The Hoyas dominated possession early on with a number of dangerous looks. On the defensive end, freshman goalkeeper
Giannis Nikopolidis (Athens, Greece / Nea Genia Zirdi) made the save that was asked of him to keep it scoreless. There was a scary moment with 13 minutes left in the first half as the Terps had a flurry of shot in the box. However, the defense stood strong and it ended with a Nikopolidis save.
Neither team would find the back of the net as the squads went into the break in a scoreless tie.
The second half was just as uneventful as neither team could find a dangerous chance. In the 63rd minute, Georgetown had controlled possession for the entire half. However, Maryland found a way as its one look trickled just left of the post as the Blue & Gray dodged a bullet.
In the final 15 minutes of regulation, the Terps began to push forward forcing the Hoya defense to disrupt passes. Senior defender
Peter Schropp (Omaha, Neb. / Creighton Prep) managed a huge clearance, but late shots from graduate student
Matt Ledder (Falls Church, Va. / Gonzaga) were stopped as the game went into overtime in a scoreless tie.
The Terps maintained possession early, but the first quality chance of overtime came from sophomore midfielder
Jacob Montes (Lake Worth, Fla. / Beaverton [Ore.]) whose crafty touch from the top of the box was blocked. This was followed up by a shot from senior
Ethan Lochner (New York, N.Y. / Stuyvesant) that went just high as the UMD defense lost its shape.
In the second overtime, it was much of the same as neither team looked particularly dangerous and tired legs resulted in the scoreless draw.
Georgetown, currently second in the nation in shots per game, outshot the Terps, 21-14, and took seven corner kicks to Maryland's three. Nikopolidis managed five saves in the net, while UMD keeper Dayne St. Clair tallied seven saves on the afternoon.
