LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell 67-46 to the No. 4/5 Baylor University Bears (6-0) Saturday evening at South Point Thanksgiving Shootout in Las Vegas, Nevada at the South Point Arena & Equestrian Center. With the loss the Hoyas move to 4-3 on the season with a three-game home stretch on the horizon.
"We played better today than we did yesterday and I'm proud of our team," said Georgetown Head Coach
James Howard. "Playing the No. 4 team in the country with that type of size could have overpowered us, but we came and we fought. I think this game will help us prepare for later on in the season."
Graduate student
Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown / Virginia) and senior guard
Dionna White (Baltimore, Md. / Milford Mill) led the way for the Hoyas with 12 points apiece. White managed the double-double with 12 rebounds as well as four assists, four steals and a block.
The Hoyas shot 26.7 percent (16 for 60) in the game, and allowed the Bears 43.3 percent (26 of 60) shooting from the field. The Blue & Gray was outrebounded by Baylor 50-34 but had 13 turnovers to the Bears 14. NaLyssa Smith and Juicy Landrum led all scorers with 14 points apiece for Baylor.
Baylor jumped out to a 9-0 lead as the Hoyas had quality looks but struggled to hit from the field. White laid in a bucket, but Baylor kept pushing making it 14-2 and forcing a GU timeout. Georgetown kept battling as the Hoyas scored in transition and off of a three-point play from White to cut the deficit. A 3-pointer from senior
Brianna Jones (North Babylon, N.Y. / North Babylon / Louisville) made it a 10-point game and the defense held in the final minutes as the Blue & Gray ended the first trailing 22-11.
Baylor opened the scoring in the second quarter, and the Blue & Gray struggled to handle the Bears' size down low. Venson scored five quick points to make it 32-18, but an 8-0 run allowed Baylor to pull away. The graduate student was GU's driving force in the period scoring 10 of Georgetown's 12 points in the quarter as the Hoyas went into the half down 47-23.
Guard
Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) opened the third with a trey, but Baylor answered right back knocking down a jumper from the wing. With both teams playing a smothering defense, the game began to get sloppy. A turnover on one end resulted in a deep fast break 3-pointer from White making it 52-31 as the Hoyas would not give up. At the end of the third it was 54-34, but the GU defense had held Baylor to just seven points in the stanza.
In the final quarter of play, Georgetown kept fighting as freshman
Tayanna Jones (Selma, N.C. / North Johnston ) showed moments of brilliance and the Blue & Gray would not stop pushing. In the end, the deficit was too much to overcome as the Hoyas eventually fell 67-46.
Georgetown will return home to McDonough Arena to battle the Fordham Rams on Thursday at 7 p.m. Live stats and a webcast featuring Monika Moore will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
