WASHINGTON – The No. 13 Georgetown University men's soccer team fell to the No. 18 Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers (1-0-1), 2-1, in double overtime Sunday evening in a top-25 matchup in Conway, S.C. With the draw the Hoyas move to 1-1 on the season heading into the home opener on Friday.
"Coastal is a really athletic, talented group of players, and they're going to be good team this year," said Georgetown Head Coach
Brian Wiese. "It just wasn't our night with how the game went, but we had plenty of opportunities that we can grow from and take those lessons into our game on Friday."
The Hoyas scored in just the fourth minute as a solid run from junior midfielder
Dylan Nealis (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) resulted in the ball begin sent in and forcing keeper Chris Datallo off his line. The ball was kicked through and back to sophomore forward
Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley) who finished perfectly to put the Blue & Gray ahead, 1-0.
The Chanticleers would come back and look for an opportunity forcing the Hoyas on their heels. Both freshman goalkeeper
Giannis Nikopolidis (Athens, Greece / Nea Genia Zirdi) and the rest of the Hoya defense was forced to come up with some big stops to keep the advantage.
In the 31st minute, Coastal would break through as Yazeed Matthews fired a low shot to the far post just out of Nikopolidis' reach to knot the game at one. The Blue & Gray would not have an answer, and the score would stand as the teams went into the break.
Coastal had a chance early in the second, but one of the best looks was from Dodson as he dribbled down the left side 1v1 and hit the post as Datallo came out to stop it. The Hoyas would continue to control the pace in the second half as two more opportunities went just wide of the post.
Those would be the best looks as the squads ended regulation tied at one apiece.
Early in overtime, the Chants had dangerous plays that were inches from the golden goal. Georgetown answered with a decent look, but after 10 minutes there would not be a score from either squad.
In the 103rd minute, Coastal was awarded a corner kick and went short finding Tsiki Ntsabeleng at the top of the box. He took two touches to his right and fired just inside the post before the Hoya defense could set, resulting in the game winner.
Georgetown was outshot, 13-10, but was awarded four corner kicks to Coastal's two in the contest. Nikopolidis managed six saves in the loss, while Datallo had one stop to his credit.
Georgetown will return to campus for the home opener on Friday afternoon against Radford at 4 p.m. The Blue & Gray will then battle the reigning national champions, No. 1 Stanford, on Labor Day in a 1 p.m. matchup.
