Hoyas and Golden Eagles Play to Scoreless Tie

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team tied the Marquette University Golden Eagles (3-6-1, 1-1-1 BIG EAST), 0-0, in double overtime in a Saturday evening BIG EAST Conference matchup in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. With the draw, the Blue & Gray moves to 5-3-2 on the season and 1-1-1 in BIG EAST play.

"A mix of the weather and Marquette's red card turned the game into something a little uglier than both teams really wanted," said Georgetown Head Coach Brian Wiese.  "The story of our season continues to be our inability to put away good chances, and we have to find a way to change that if we want to have the type of season the we think we're capable of."

The Hoyas controlled possession and had a number of good looks as junior forward Achara (Enugu, Nigeria / Berkshire School [Mass.]) and sophomore Derek Dodson (Aurora, Ill. / Waubonsie Valley) were active early on.  As the minutes ticked away, the Blue & Gray had chances on the wet and rainy pitch but could not connect.

With 10 minutes remaining in the first, Achara coming up the left side forced keeper Luis Barraza to come off his line.  The ball went to senior captain Kyle Zajec (Westport, Conn. / Staples) who fired an on-target shot, but is was stopped by a defender.  Late in the first, Marquette began to look dangerous, but the Blue & Gray held on for it to remain scoreless in the first.

The second half was a turning point as a straight red card on MU's Alan Salmeron in the 52nd minute allowed the Hoyas to play a man up for the remainder of the match.  Georgetown held possession as the Golden Eagles packed it in, but never really tested Barraza.  On the defensive end for the Blue & Gray, Marquette looked to score on counters but was unsuccessful.

Following another 45 minutes of scoreless soccer, the squads went into overtime without a goal on the board.

As the extra time started, the rain began to fall harder as the teams battled through a cold downpour.  The best look of the first overtime period was from senior defender Peter Schropp (Omaha, Neb. / Creighton Prep) as his open header off of the corner kick sailed just wide of the post.

In the first minute of the second overtime period, a free kick sailed to the far post where senior captain Brendan McDonough (Matthews, N.C. / Charlotte Catholic) rose above the defense for the header, but Barraza made the save.  That would be the only solid look for the Hoyas in the final period as the teams played to a scoreless draw after 110 minutes.

Georgetown outshot Marquette, 12-11, and took eight corner kicks to MU's three.  Freshman goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis (Athens, Greece / Nea Genia Zirdi) had three saves in the net, while Barraza managed five.

Georgetown will be back in action on Friday as GU continues BIG EAST play at Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.  The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
