Hoyas Win Big Over Blackbirds

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University field hockey team continued its unbeaten streak on Friday afternoon as it defeated LIU Brooklyn 7-0. The Hoyas are now 5-0.

Scoring opened early for the Blue & Gray as junior Lindsay Getz (Northfield, Ill. / Loyola Academy) finished a close range shot just under two minutes into the game. A fairly even 20 minutes passed until the Hoyas struck again, this time off a penalty corner. Penalty striker Helena Masiello (East Greenbush, N.Y. / Columbia) blasted the ball past the LIU goalkeeper. Both Katie Maransky (Blue Bell, Pa. / Mount Saint Joseph's Academy) and Ali Cronin (Hershey, Pa. / Hershey) were credited with assists off the corner. The first half finished 2-0 with GU leading 10-2 in shots.

The Blue & Gray picked up momentum in the second half of play and scored an additional five goals off 21 shots. Getz picked up her second goal of the day six minutes into the half with the assist from Cami Osborne (Newtown Square, Pa. / Academy of Notre Dame de Namur), and Kylee Cunningham (Whitehall, Pa. / Whitehall) picked up her second goal of the season moments later. About 15 minutes into the half, the Hoyas converted once again on a penalty corner, this time from junior Emily Fraser (Ballston Lake, N.Y. / Shenendehowa). Fraser took an initial shot off the penalty corner, which got blocked, but she grabbed her own rebound and fired again, this time finding the back of the cage. Just three minutes later, Osborne scored her first of the game and fourth of the season. Osborne's goal came from a low, hard shot from mid range. The seventh and final goal of the contest came from junior Michaela Bruno (Garden City, N.Y. / Garden City), as she converted with a shot of her own from the top of the circle.

The Hoyas put up seven goals in the contest from six separate players, with Bruno and Fraser picking up their first of the season. Osborne continues to lead the Hoyas in goals and points.

Both GU goalkeepers saw action in today's shutout. Neither was forced to make a save in the contest as the Hoyas outshot the Blackbirds 31-3. Entering the match, Georgetown ranked second in save percentage (0.920) and third in goals against average (0.50) nationally.

Georgetown remains unbeaten and atop the BIG EAST standings with a perfect 5-0 record. The Hoyas will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 14 as they start their four-game road swing against Villanova. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
