– The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell to the Creighton University Bluejays (8-7, 2-2 BIG EAST) 65-38 Sunday afternoon at D.J. Sokol Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 8-7 overall and an even 2-2 in BIG EAST Conference play.
Senior guard Dionna White
(Baltimore, Md. / Milford Mill) was the lone Hoya in double figures with 15 points and four boards. Graduate student Dorothy Adomako
(Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) managed eight points and a team-best nine rebounds. Georgetown was outrebounded by Creighton 38-29. The Hoyas shot 28.0 percent (14 for 50) from the field as well as 57.1 percent (8 for 14) from the charity stripe. The defense allowed the Bluejays into 48.1 percent (26 of 54) shooting in the contest. The Blue & Gray forced eight turnovers from CU with two steals in the game.
The Bluejays opened the scoring and jumped out to a 12-3 lead before the first media timeout. Out of the break, the defense got a stop and Adomako put in a layup as GU battled to get back in the game. Creighton would answer with a 3-pointer as the Blue & Gray trailed by eight, 17-9, at the end of the first stanza.
Creighton scored first, but it was White who had a wide open layup on the other end. After some defensive stops, a trey by freshman guard Nikola Kovacikova
(Levice, Slovakia / UKF Nitra) and a layup from junior guard Morgan Smith
(Upper Marlboro, Md. / Riverdale Baptist) cut it to three as the Hoyas fought back. Smith's back-to-back layups cut the lead to one with a 9-0 run, but the Bluejays answered with a quick 5-0 run of their own midway through the second.
Georgetown stayed within one possession of the Bluejays for much of the quarter until a late spurt allowed Creighton to pull away. The Hoyas went into the half trailing by eight, 33-25.
Creighton's Audrey Faber was on fire in the third as she scored the first 10 points for the Bluejays helping CU move ahead by as much as 14. White tried to inject some offense for the Blue & Gray but it was not enough as the Hoyas scored just nine points in the quarter to make it 47-34 at the end of the third.
Georgetown was unable to find an answer in the final quarter and Creighton began to pull away. At the final whistle, the Hoyas fell 65-38.
Georgetown will return home to continue BIG EAST play next weekend as the squad hosts the No. 24/24 DePaul University Blue Demons on Friday at 7 p.m. at McDonough Arena.
