WASHINGTON – The No. 3 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a dominating performance to get the 5-0 win over the Pitt Panthers in the NCAA Tournament Second Round Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field. The Hoyas controlled the pace from end-to-end to get the victory and advance to the Round of 16. The Hoyas are now 16-1-3 while the Panthers finish the season with a mark of 10-8-2.
Sounds of the Game
- "We came out focused on setting the tone and getting the boys going early so that our subs could come on and keep the same type of energy because if we can do that for 90 minutes, we're a hard team to beat." – Derek Dodson
- "Before the game, we told them that this has to be our time, we have to believe it's our time. They needed to understand that we've been the three seed, we've had home field advantage. This is all familiar territory, but what we haven't put together is that magical run of five games. It's the ability to understand that the margins are so small and we've been here before but if we want to make history within our own program we have to navigate the run of the season, a BIG EAST postseason and an NCAA Tournament. We haven't done it, and I think this group has really embraced that." – Head Coach Brian Wiese
How it Happened
- The Hoyas found the back of the net in the fifth minute as passes in the top of the box eventually freed freshman Dante Polvara. He found junior captain Derek Dodson to his right who passed to an overlapping Dylan Nealis. The senior captain had a clinical finish to put the Hoyas on top 1-0.
- Georgetown didn't slow down as Montes had it in the middle of the field and found Dodson ahead of the defense. The junior spun to the left and fired sending it just inside the post to make it 2-0 in the 13th minute.
- In the 20th minute, the Hoyas had a deep free kick outside the box looking for a goal off of the setpiece. The ball went into the middle as a Panther had it ricochet off of his body and into the goal as GU took the three-goal lead.
- The Blue & Gray continued to control throughout the second half. In the 66th minute, the Hoyas had a chance that was stopped. On the clearance, Nealis intercepted and fired as his shot went through the gloves of Pitt keeper Arie Ammann.
- Georgetown added one more in the 82nd minute when Aidan Rocha had a hard shot saved, but Ammann's rebound went to the foot of junior Foster McCune who buried it in the back of the net to make it 5-0 which would stand as the final.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot Pitt 20-4 (12-2 SOG) and GU took three corner kicks to the Panthers' two.
- Freshman Tomas Romero had a solid game with two saves, the team's 11th shutout of the season and his ninth victory of the season, while Ammann took the loss with four saves in the contest.
- The 5-0 win marks Georgetown's largest margin of victory ever in an NCAA Tournament contest.
- Next week will be GU's sixth trip to the Round of 16 in program history. Georgetown is 1-2-2 in the third round of the tournament.
