DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team put together a solid second half, but could not overcome an early deficit falling 66-52 to the Davidson Wildcats in both teams' season opener at Belk Arena in Davidson, North Carolina. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 0-1 to begin the 2019-20 campaign.
How it Happened
- It was close before a 7-0 Wildcat run put the Hoyas at a deficit. Taylor Barnes answered with a jumper, but a 5-0 run late in the first made it 22-10 at the end of the quarter.
- Davidson opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer, but it was Tatiana Thompson who answered with a pair of buckets. The Wildcats would finish the quarter on a 7-2 run as GU entered the half down 34-16.
- Anita Kelava scored on the first possession of the third quarter on a put back and GU staged a 6-1 run forcing a pair of Wildcat turnovers.
- Late in the third quarter, Davidson had the momentum, but it was Marvellous Osagie-Erese who went coast-to-coast in the final seconds for the layup as GU outscored the Wildcats 18-17 in the stanza. Despite the solid quarter, GU still trailed 51-34 at the end of the period.
- Georgetown outscored the Wildcats again in the final stanza, 18-15, as Nikola Kovacikova got hot scoring 10 points in the final 10 minutes. Despite the effort the Blue & Gray fell 66-52.
Of Note
- Kovacikova led the Hoyas with 12 points, and Kelava added 10 for two Georgetown players in double figures.
- The duo also combined for 16 rebounds as Kelava pulled down nine, including five on the offensive glass, and Kovacikova managed seven.
- Georgetown was outrebounded 46-38 but forced 18 Davidson turnovers while committing just 14.
- GU shot 30.8 percent (20 for 65), but allowed the Wildcats 41.7 percent (25 for 60) shooting from the field.
