No. 3 Hoyas Win BIG EAST Regular Season Championship

WASHINGTON – The No. 3 Georgetown University men's soccer team managed a 1-1 double overtime tie to claim the program's sixth BIG EAST Regular Season Championship outright Wednesday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Shaw Field.  With the draw, Georgetown moved to 14-1-2 on the season and finished league play with a mark of 7-0-2.  Creighton earned the No. 4 seed and is 8-6-2 overall as well as 4-4-1 in the BIG EAST.

Sounds of the Game
  • "It's always a little hard because it's a Wednesday afternoon, we had players coming to warmups straight from tests, there isn't a big crowd so these games are always a little more of a challenge, that's the nature of it.  We've handled these type of situations before, we've played plenty of semifinals here, but it is a tournament where we're trying to three-peat and it matters a lot to these guys to try to win it.  I think they'll have the urgency required on Wednesday and then it is just a question of can we execute the chances that we create? " – Head Coach Brian Wiese

How it Happened
  • The Hoyas controlled possession for much of the first half and had a number of chances on the stingy Creighton defense.
  • In the 24th minute, Georgetown got on the board off of a Jacob Montes corner kick.  He served it into the back post where a charging Sean O'Hearn headed it in catch Bluejay keeper Paul Kruse out of position.  Achara redirected O'Hearn's shot to make it 1-0.
  • Creighton did not give up as the Hoyas defense was tested and goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis had to make a big save later in the half as the Hoyas went into the break leading 1-0.
  • The Bluejays came out of the half fighting and found the back of the net in the 61st minute.  Keegan Boyd's shot was saved by Nikopolidis, but the rebound flew to Yudai Tashiro who buried the diving header to tie the game at one.
  • In the final minutes and overtime, both squads had chances as Nikopolidis and Kruse had to come up with stops to keep the draw.

Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Creighton 27-11 (11-5 SOG) and held a 19-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Nikopolidis managed four saves, while Kruse and the Bluejay defense combined for 10 stops on the afternoon.
  • With the championship, Georgetown has secured the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage for the league tournament.
  • GU's two goals in league play set a new BIG EAST record for least goals allowed in conference play.  The previous record was three shared by Xavier (2014) and Notre Dame (2004).
  • Creighton's goal snapped a streak of 790 scoreless minutes for the Blue & Gray as well as a streak of eight-consecutive shutouts.
