WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the Creighton University Bluejays (10-11, 4-6) on Friday evening at McDonough Arena 62-53. With the win, the Blue & Gray improves to 10-11 overall and 4-6 in the BIG EAST.
"It's always good to be back in the winning column," said Head Coach
James Howard. "The first time we met Creighton this season, we suffered a big loss. We had a lot of meetings since that loss and we came out much better tonight.
Morgan Smith did a great job defending Audrey Faber and her defense really helped us, holding her to less than 20 points."
Graduate student guard
Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) recorded a double-double for the Hoyas with a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds. Senior guard
Dionna White (Baltimore, Md. / Milford Mill) contributed 13 points and eight rebounds to go along with seven helpers and five steals. Junior guard
Morgan Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Riverdale Baptist) added eight rebounds to the win.
The Hoyas outscored the Bluejays in every quarter but the fourth and shot 37.9 percent (25 for 66) from the field while allowing the Bluejays to shoot 29.4 percent (15 for 51). Creighton outrebounded GU 41-38 but the Blue & Gray committed 10 turnovers compared to Creighton's 16. Georgetown also tallied 13 steals while the Bluejays recorded five.
Creighton opened up the scoring with a 3-pointer before junior forward
Anita Kelava (Zagreb, Croatia / Croatian National Team / Maine) hit a jumper to spark a 10-point run. Creighton managed to cut GU's lead to three, but with 20 seconds left on the clock, Adomako managed a rebound and was fouled on the putback, connecting the three-point play to make it 12-7 at the end of the first stanza.
Georgetown allowed the Bluejays to make it a one-point difference, but freshman guard
Nikola Kovacikova (Levice, Slovakia / UKF Nitra) answered with back-to-back treys to put the Blue & Gray in control of the game. White found Smith open on the right block for an easy bucket to force a Creighton timeout.
The Hoyas allowed just one basket from the Bluejays in the final four minutes of the half as GU finished the second quarter with three more baskets including a buzzer beater from graduate student guard
Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown / Virginia) to give the Hoyas a 10-point lead 26-16 at the break.
Georgetown started the second half off stronger than ever with a quick five points in the first minute. Interrupted by a 3-pointer from the Bluejays, the Hoyas went on to score another six points making it 37-19. After a trey from White in the left corner, Creighton slowed down Georgetown's run with a trip to the charity stripe and a 3-pointer. Adomako made a pair of free throws shortly after, but a shooting foul on Georgetown sent Creighton back to the line going 3 for 3. Senior
Brianna Jones (North Babylon, N.Y. / North Babylon / Lousville) managed a clutch 3-pointer at the buzzer making it 45-30 before the final 10 minutes of action.
Creighton managed to cut the lead to 10, but Georgetown answered with a trey and a fast-break layup. The scoring went back and forth between both squads, but a 13-2 run by the Bluejays made it a five-point difference in the final minute. With 10 seconds to go, Jones beat the press finding a wide open Smith under the basket for another bucket and Adomako finished off the scoring with a pair of free throws to manage the 62-53 win.
