VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell to the Villanova University Wildcats (16-9, 9-3 BIG EAST) 91-43 Saturday afternoon at the Finneran Pavillion in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 11-14 on the season and 5-9 in league play.
Freshman guard
Tayanna Jones (Selma, N.C. / North Johnston) was the lone Hoya in double figures with a career-best 10 points, while graduate student guard
Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va. / Cosby) added eight points. Junior guard
Morgan Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md. / Riverdale Baptist) led the Hoyas on the boards with six rebounds.
The Hoyas shot 27.3 percent (15 for 55) from the field while allowing the Wildcats to shoot 64.9 percent (37 for 57). Georgetown was outrebounded by Villanova 40-25, and both teams committed 10 turnovers apiece.
Villanova scored first, but Georgetown answered with a 3-pointer from Smith. The Wildcats followed suit to regain the lead that they would not relinquish in the first quarter. Graduate student
Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown / Virginia) knocked down another trey midway through the half, but Nova's hot hand allowed the Wildcats to build the 11-point lead late in the period as GU trailed 21-10.
The Wildcats hit another trey to begin the second, but the defense stood strong coming up with four-consecutive stops. Unfortunately, GU could not take advantage on the other end as the squad tallied a nine-minute field goal drought to eventually go down by as much as 19. Adomako ended the scoring drought, but Georgetown had a long road ahead of it to get back in the game.
Despite a few buckets, Villanova would keep finding an answer as the Blue & Gray went into the half down 38-16.
Villanova began the third quarter with an 11-1 run as the game slipped away from the Hoyas. A bright spot was the play of Jones and junior
Marvellous Osagie-Erese (East Orange, N.J. / East Orange STEM Academy) who both hit a jumper and a 3-pointer upon entering the contest. With the 'Cats hitting just about everything from the field, it was too much for Georgetown as the Hoyas trailed 77-30 at the end of the third.
It was much of the same in the fourth as the Wildcats continued to hit and GU struggled to find a rhythm resulting in the 91-43 final.
The Hoyas will be back in action on Friday in GU's annual school day game. The squad will host Seton Hall at 11 a.m. at McDonough Arena. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Ben Gordon-Goldstein and Hoya alum Monica McNutt calling the action. Live stats will be available at
