WASHINGTON – Sophomore
London Diller (Abilene, Texas / George Ranch) pitched a complete game on Saturday afternoon in a 3-0 shut out against Harvard (3-4) in the District Classic at Nats Youth Academy. The Hoyas won their first shutout of the season after falling earlier in the day to Saint Joseph's (6-1), 5-0. With the split, Georgetown moves to 4-12 on the season.
Four different Hoyas tallied doubles on the day, including freshman
Mae Forshey (Phoenix, Ariz. / Arcadia) who landed one in each game. The freshman catcher now leads the Hoyas with a team high of six doubles. Seniors
Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md. / Northern) and
Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough), as well as freshman
Kiki Besnard (Irvine, Calif. / Northwood), also recorded doubles.
In game one against the Hawks, junior
Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas / St. John's School) went the first 5.2 innings in the circle and allowed five runs off of six hits while walking four and striking out nine. Junior
Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va. / James Madison HS) pitched the last 1.1 innings and allowed a pair of hits.
Neither team could get their bats going until the top of the sixth inning when the Hawks broke open the game. Saint Joseph's landed back-to-back doubles and a pair of singles to take a late 5-0 lead. Forshey hit her first double of the day in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough to put GU on the board.
With one more chance to make a comeback against the Hawks, Amen opened up the final inning with a double and eventually reached third but the Hoya offense struggled to rally and dropped a decision against SJU.
Georgetown bounced back in game two against the Crimson. Diller went all 7.0 innings in the circle to take the credit for her first collegiate shutout. The sophomore allowed a pair of hits while walking three and striking out five.
It didn't take long for the Blue & Gray to take the lead in the first inning. Forshey rallied the squad with a double in her first at-bat against Harvard and put GU on the board when Bennett singled and scored her. Diller then made it 2-0 with a single and brought in senior
Olivia Russ (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Ocean View), who was pinch running for Bennett.
The Hoyas scored its third and final run in the bottom of the fifth. With sophomore
Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif. / Terra Linda) on base and power hitter Bennett up to bat, Bennett doubled and brought home Jones to score and sealed the 3-0 victory for GU.
The Blue & Gray will wrap up the District Classic on Sunday with a pair of games starting at 11:30 a.m. against Brown and then at 2 p.m. against Howard. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
