Late Rally by Hoyas Not Enough to Get by Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Despite a pair of late runs in the seventh inning, the Georgetown University softball team dropped an 8-4 decision against Seton Hall in the BIG EAST series finale at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Field on Sunday. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 13-33 on the season and 5-11 in the conference while the Pirates advance to 22-23 overall and 8-8 in the BIG EAST.

Senior Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J. / Hillsborough) led the Blue & Gray with a pair of hits, including a double, and scored a run. Freshman Mae Forshey (Phoenix, Ariz. / Arcadia) and junior Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del. / Red Lion Christian Academy) also had a pair of hits on the day and Forshey recorded an RBI.

In the circle, junior Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va. / James Madison HS) got the nod. She threw 1.1 innings of work, gave up four runs off of five hits, walked one and struck out one. Freshman Cassie Henning (Atlanta, Ga. / Wesleyan) relieved Vannicola in the circle for the next 2.0 innings. Henning allowed three runs off of four hits. Sophomore London Diller (Sugar Land, Texas / George Ranch) finished out the game without allowing any runs. Diller walked two and struck out three.

Seton Hall opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with back-to- back doubles to take a 3-0 lead. The Hoyas entered the scoring column in the top of the second while Forshey and Henning were on third and first, respectively. Forshey snuck home to score as Henning got caught stealing second to make it 3-1.

The Pirates responded with another run off of a single in the bottom of the second, as well as a home run in the third to extend their lead to 5-1. A three-run rally in the bottom of the fourth put SHU ahead of the Hoyas 8-1. Georgetown found an opportunity to score in the top of the fifth when junior Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va. / Woodgrove) blasted one to right field and scored Henning from third. The Blue & Gray had another chance to put runs on the board in the same inning, but a double play by the Pirates ended the inning sooner than anticipated.

In the Blue & Gray's final at-bat, Amen sparked a rally with a double to left field and advanced two more bases on the next pair of batters. Sophomore Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif. / Terra Linda) then singled up the middle to score Amen and make it 8-3. Holiday followed up with a similar hit and moved Jones a base. Forshey finished it off with a single to center field to bring in the fourth run for the Hoyas for a final score of 8-4.

Up next, Georgetown will close out the regular season next weekend, May 4-5, at Nats Youth Academy with a three-game BIG EAST series against Providence. The Hoya seniors will be recognized before Saturday's doubleheader at noon. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
