WASHINGTON – The No. 3 Georgetown University men's soccer team opened BIG EAST Conference play with a 3-0 victory over the Butler University Bulldogs Friday evening at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl. With the win, GU improved to 6-0 on the season and 1-0 in league play, while the Bulldogs move to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference for the year.
Sounds of the Game
- "We played with more urgency and pace in the second half, I thought there was much more ball movement. We asked the guys to turn the screws at half and they really responded. There were a lot of guys who were sharing the ball and finishing the chances that they were getting. I'm happy with the way we are limiting their chances and we've continued to find ways to score goals which makes life a lot a lot easier." – Head Coach Brian Wiese.
How it Happened
- The teams went into the half tied despite the Hoyas dominating possession with a 7-1 advantage in shots.
- The game winner came in the 47th minute as senior captain Dylan Nealis dribbled through traffic to find junior Jacob Montes at the top of the box. Montes took one touch and fired to the right post to make it 1-0.
- In the 75th minute, sophomore Zach Riviere bent in an impressive free kick from the right side to make it 2-0 in favor of the Blue & Gray.
- Montes connected on his second of the game when junior captain Derek Dodson passed to classmate Paul Rothrock on the left side of the field. Rothrock found Montes who managed the perfect finish once again to give the Hoyas the 3-0 lead.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot Butler 14-4 overall with an 8-0 advantage in shots on goal.
- The Hoyas took six corner kicks to Butler's five.
- Freshman goalkeeper Tomas Romero was awarded the win the net with no saves in the game.
- Rothrock and Montes have scored a point in the past three consecutive contests.
- Riviere is leading the team in scoring with nine points, while Rothrock, Montes and Dodson have eight points apiece.
