Football Travels to Columbia for Saturday Showdown

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team travels to New York this weekend to take on Columbia University on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff at Wein Stadium is set for 1 p.m. Saturday's game will be the fifth rendition of the Lou Little Trophy series, named for College Football Hall of Fame Head Coach Lou Little who coached at both Georgetown and Columbia.

SCOUTING GEORGETOWN
  • The Hoyas enter Saturday's contest with a 2-1 overall record and a two-game winning streak after a 43-3 victory over Marist and a 69-0 win over Catholic, both at home.
  • The GU defense leads the Patriot League and ranks fourth nationally in scoring defense, allowing just 10.0 ppg. The Hoyas have not allowed a touchdown in two games and have forced seven turnovers (4 fumbles, 3 interceptions).
  • The Hoya offense is fifth nationally with an average of 44.0 ppg and 20th in rushing offense with 238.0 ypg.
  • Senior Gunther Johnson has passed for 328 yards and four touchdowns, while rushing for 134 yards and two scores.
  • Herman Moultrie III leads the GU rushing attack with 177 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
  • Cameron Crayton has a team-high 11 catches, while Joshua Tomas leads the receiving corps with 131 receiving yards and Michael Dereus has three receiving touchdowns.
  • Cameron Deen leads the defense with 16 total tackles, including 11 solo, and has one of the team's three interceptions.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Hoyas put together more than 500 yards of total offense, scoring nine touchdowns in a 69-0 victory over Catholic on Sept. 14.
  • The Hoyas managed 567 total yards to Catholic's 72 and ran for 353 yards while holding the Cardinals to -8 rushing yards.
  • Johnson finished 4-of-8 passing for 177 yards and a touchdown, while rushing twice for 49 yards.
  • Joseph Brunell completed 8-of-9 passes for 97 yards and two touchdowns.
  • Joshua Stakely rushed for a team-high 98 yards and his first career touchdown.
  • Max Edwards and Jackson Saffold both scored two touchdowns while Herman Moultrie III and Jay Tolliver each rushed for a score.
  • Brad Hurst connected on field goals from 44 and 35 yards, and made all six of his PAT attempts.
  • Justin Fonteneaux led the GU defense with six tackles, while David Owens and Palmer Nix each had five.
  • Tomas had a 40-yard touchdown reception and a 66-yard punt return for a touchdown, earning Patriot League Honorable Mention. His punt return score was the first for the Hoyas since 2012 and the fifth-longest return in program history.
 
SCOUTING COLUMBIA
  • Columbia opened its season last weekend with a 31-14 win at Saint Francis (Pa.), scoring 24 unanswered points.
  • Mike Roussos totaled 149 all-purpose yards and scored two touchdowns including a 56-yard punt return score and Ryan Young ran for a 65-yard touchdown.
  • The Lions return 15 starters and nine total All-Ivy League selections from a program that has won 14 of its last 20 games.
 
ABOUT THE MATCHUP
  • Georgetown and Columbia are meeting for the seventh time on Saturday and it will be the fifth battle for the Lou Little Trophy, with each team having two wins in the series.
  • Four of the past five overall meetings between the two teams have been decided by eight points or less.
  • The Lou Little series began in 2015 and the Hoyas won the first two games before Columbia won the last two.
  • Georgetown is 1-3 against Columbia in New York.
 
ABOUT LOU LITTLE
  • Little arrived on the Hilltop in 1924 and helped bring Georgetown football into the modern era.
  • He recorded a 41-12-3 record over six seasons, while also serving as athletics director. His .759 win percentage is still the highest among GU head coaches who have coached more than 20 games on the Hilltop.
  • Little took over at Columbia in 1930 and continued his Hall of Fame career until 1956, posting 110 victories with the Lions.
  • Overall his teams won 149 games, lost 122 and tied 11.
COMING UP NEXT
The Blue & Gray will continue its two-game Ivy League swing as they travel back to New York next weekend to take on Cornell. Kickoff on Saturday, Oct. 5 is scheduled for 3 p.m.
