NEW YORK – The Georgetown University football team won its third-straight game, defeating Columbia 24-10 on Saturday afternoon at Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium. With the victory, the Hoyas move to 3-1 on the season and claimed the Lou Little Trophy for the first time since 2016. Columbia falls to 1-1 on the year.
KEY STATS
- The Hoyas outgained Columbia 231-224 and the defense held the Lions to just 30 rushing yards on 35 attempts.
- The GU defense forced five turnovers on three interceptions and two fumbles, while sacking Columbia's quarterbacks four times.
- Joseph Brunell entered the game in the second quarter and completed 10-of-19 passes for 146 yards, while also rushing for a touchdown.
- Herman Moultrie III gained 36 yards on 19 carries and scoring a pair of touchdowns.
- Joshua Tomas finished with 206 all-purpose yards, including a team-high 104 receiving yards. He also rushed for 21 yards, had 15 yards on punt returns and 66 yards on three kickoff returns.
- Xavier Reddick led the defense with nine total tackles, including 1.0 sacks and 2.0 TFL.
- Khristian Tate had seven tackles with 2.0 sacks, 2.5 TFL and one forced fumble.
- Wes Bowers also forced a fumble on a strip sack, while Micah McNeil, Jonathan Honore and Justin Fonteneaux all had interceptions.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Columbia scored on its first drive of the game to take a 7-0 lead. The GU defense only allowed 45 total yards the remainder of the first half, including negative 13 yards in the second quarter.
- The Hoyas forced two turnovers in the second quarter on McNeil's interception and a strip sack by Bowers that was recovered by Quincy Chinwuko.
- Moultrie capped off a 10-play, 57-yard scoring drive with a 3-yard touchdown rush to tie the game 7-7 with 2:08 left in the second quarter.
- After Bowers' sack and Chinwuko's fumble recovery, Moultrie took advantage of a short field with another 3-yard scoring run to put GU up 14-7 with just 16 seconds left before halftime.
- The defense forced a missed 39-yard field goal after Columbia recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff of the second half.
- Davis Walker connected a 27-yard field goal to extend the lead to 17-7 with 5:08 left in the third quarter.
- The Lions pulled with one score with a field goal less than two minutes into the fourth quarter, but the defense came up with interceptions inside the red zone on the next two possessions.
- Georgetown put together a 13-play, 90-yard drive that consumed 7:39 of the quarter and Brunell capped it off with a 7-yard scoring run to complete the scoring with 1:47 remaining.
- Tate sealed the victory with a strip sack that was recovered by Owen Kessler.
OF NOTE
- Moultrie's two touchdowns give him five rushing touchdowns on the season, the most by a Hoya in a season since Kyle Nolan had five in 2015.
