Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 6 Georgetown Downs Anteaters, 1-0

WASHINGTON –  The No. 6 Georgetown University men's soccer team connected on a late goal to secure the 1-0 victory over the UC Irvine Anteaters Friday evening in Irvine, Calif.  With the win, the Hoyas improve to 3-0 on the season while UC Irvine drops to 0-2-1 on the year.

How it Happened
  • In the 86th minute, junior midfielder Jacob Montes took a pass from junior defender Sean O'Hearn off of a setpiece and scored an impressive goal curling it in just inside the far post.  The man-up goal made it 1-0 in favor of the Blue & Gray.
  • Georgetown played a man up from the 79th minute on following a second yellow on an Anteater.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Giannis Nikopolidis came up with a big stop in the 58th minute to keep it scoreless.
  • Each team had a chance in the first half as a shot from close in was blocked by a Hoya defender and sophomore midfielder Zach Riviere had his shot roll just wide of the post to keep it scoreless at the break.
Sounds of the Game
  • "The first half was going how we wanted it to, we were creating opportunities and we had some really good chances that we should have finished.  I thought from the second-half whistle to the red card Irvine was the better team.  We struggled with ryhthym and getting it out of our half with purpose and most of that was because of what Irvine was doing.  After the red card we really settled into it and got a better feel of the game to set up just a great goal.  Winning on the road is always hard and, playing the teams we play, we know it's not easy but I think this team has match winners in it and tonight it was Jacob Montes' turn." - Head Coach Brian Wiese.
Of Note
  • Montes' goal was his first of the season and the third of his career.
  • O'Hearn's assist was the second of his career.
  • Nikopolidis had three saves in the net to notch his first shutout of the season.
  • Georgetown outshot UC Irvine 10-6 and both squads took three shots on goal apiece.
  • The Hoyas took three corners to the Anteater's six.
