Georgetown Falls in Heartbreaker to Butler

WASHINGTON – Despite a strong comeback from the Georgetown women's basketball team, the Hoyas fell short against Butler 47-46 in the final minute of play at McDonough Arena on Sunday afternoon. GU was down by as much as 12 points in the third quarter but managed to cut the Bulldogs' lead. With the loss, the Blue & Gray falls to 4-13 overall and 1-5 in the BIG EAST Conference, while Butler moves on to 12-5 on the season and 4-2 in the league.

How it Happened
  • Graduate student Taylor Barnes opened up the scoring for the Hoyas with a 3-pointer, but a 12-5 scoring run by the Bulldogs made it difficult for GU to come back.
  • A layup from junior Breonna Mayfield and a free throw from graduate student Brianna Jones would cut Butler's lead to just four but the Bulldogs managed to scored four quick points to take a 16-8 lead before heading into the second stanza.
  • The Blue & Gray picked up its momentum in the second quarter thanks to the scoring combination between classmates Marvellous Osagie-Erese and Anita Kelava.

  • The Hoyas maintained their rhythm coming out of the half as freshman Graceann Bennett sparked a 13-6 scoring run. GU hit back-to-back baskets and a 3-pointer to force the Bulldogs to call a timeout as the Hoyas cut their lead to just two.
  • Butler put up three points before the end of the third as the Hoyas trailed 37-32 going into the final stanza.
  • A trey from Barnes cut it to just three. Jones and Kelava hit back-to-back jumpers to give GU a 44-43 lead but the Bulldogs answered with a three to take back their advantage.
  • The Hoyas tied it up at 46 with a layup from junior Tatiana Thompson.
  • With a minute left to play, Georgetown was charged with a foul and Butler moved ahead on a made free throw. The Blue & Gray had an opportunity to score, but fell short for the eventual 47-46 result.
