Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Georgetown Falls at No. 24/23 DePaul in Season Opener

CHICAGO – The Georgetown University women's basketball team (0-1, 0-1 BIG EAST) fell 72-54 to No. 24/23 DePaul University (4-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Wintrust Arena. The game marked the first of the 2020-21 season for the Blue & Gray.
Head Coach James Howard
  • "For our freshmen to play in their first game, against the No. 24 team in the country after a pause to the season, I was really proud of them. I expected some deer in headlights moments, but they held their own and they never backed down."
How it Happened
  • The first quarter was a battle as the young Hoyas fought to stay within a possession or two.
  • Georgetown ended the first quarter trailing 21-18, however, the Blue & Gray came right back to start the second and take the lead as junior Shanniah Wright managed a layup down low and freshman Jazmyn Harmon sank a 3-pointer in the corner to make it 23-21 and force a DePaul timeout.
  • The Blue Demons came back with a 10-0 run before a free throw from freshman Kelsey Ransom stopped the momentum.
  • DePaul would lead by as many as 13, but Georgetown managed a late 5-0 spurt led by four points from Yasmin Ott including a jumper at the buzzer making it 39-31 going into the break.
  • The Hoyas came out fired up as a layup from sophomore Graceann Bennett started things off. The Hoya defense forced a turnover on the other end and Ott spotted up for a trey to cut the deficit to three 39-36 and forcing a timeout by the Blue Demons.
  • That would be as close as GU would come, however, as a 6-0 run gave the game back to DePaul.
  • The Blue Demons led by as many as 20 in the fourth quarter, but a late spurt in the final minutes made it 72-54 at the buzzer.
Of Note
  • Two freshmen in their first collegiate games led the way as Ott tallied 18 points and Ransom managed 14. Classmate Harmon also scored eight points as Ott and Harmon combined for six 3-pointers.
  • Graduate student Taylor Baur pulled down nine boards to go along with one block.
  • The Hoyas shot 35.2 percent (19-54) but allowed 39.9 percent (25-66) shooting by DePaul.
  • GU was outrebounded 43-41 and forced 24 turnovers while committing 32 in the contest.
  • The Hoyas started three freshmen as well as one transfer for a new look this season.
Schedule Notes
  • Georgetown's game scheduled for December 22 against Seton Hall has been postponed due to a recent positive COVID-19 test within the Pirate program. No makeup date has been announced at this time.
  • The BIG EAST Conference released the second half of its women's basketball schedule on Friday. The Blue & Gray's first game after break will be a home contest against Butler on December 31 at 2 p.m.
