MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Georgetown University softball team went 2-0 on the second day of the Madeira Beach Tournament, seeing wins against Cornell (1-1) and Manhattan (2-2). The Hoyas defeated the Big Red 3-2 in game one and later downed Manhattan 6-4. With the pair of wins, GU advances to 3-11 on the season.
vs. Cornell
How it Happened
- The Hoyas had a strong fifth inning at the plate. With a pair of runners on base, senior Alexa Dolby recorded a sacrifice fly to shortstop in order to score junior Macy Cartwright. Sophomore Kiki Besnard followed up with a line drive down the third base line and scored senior Ciara Sullivan to grab a 2-0 lead.
- Georgetown extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Nora Campo landed her second double on the day and scored junior Savannah Jones.
- The Big Red made a comeback in the final inning, recording four hits and scoring two runs. With bases loaded and a full count, Cornell knocked one out to left field but junior Deirdre Gallo made the final out to claim the 3-2 victory.
Of Note
- Junior London Diller was credited with the win in the circle. She pitched a complete game and allowed a pair of runs off of six hits, walked one and struck out seven.
- Campo led the Hoya offense with a pair of doubles and brought in an RBI. Freshman Lorena Vasquez-Inzunza and Forshey also landed doubles. Campo and Vasquez-Inzunza's doubles were the first of their careers.
vs. Manhattan
How it Happened
- Manhattan opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first with a double to bring in the first run.
- The Hoyas grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Holiday blasted her hit out of center field for a two-run homer.
- Georgetown extended its lead to 3-1 in the sixth inning when Sullivan singled to second base and scored Cartwright. Dolby followed up with another hit and scored Henning to make it 4-1.
- In the top of the sixth, the Jaspers managed to make it a one-run game off of a two-run homer.
- Holiday landed another home run in the top of the seventh and brought in two more runs for the Hoyas, making it 6-3.
- Manhattan added one more run to the board in the bottom of the seventh but senior pitcher Katie Vannicola struck out the last batter to seal the 6-4 win.
Of Note
- Sophomore Cassie Henning got the start in the circle and threw 5.1 innings of work. Henning gave up three runs off of five hits, struck out three and walked three. Vannicola finished it off and allowed one run off of a pair of hits.
- Three different Hoyas recorded a pair of hits, including Holiday who had two home runs and brought in four RBIs. Forshey and Campo rounded out those with two hits.
