Trio of Records Fall on Day Two of BIG EAST Championships

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team set three records on the second day of the 2020 BIG EAST Championships, presented by Jeep on Thursday at the Nassau County Aquatic Center. Brett Sherman and Drew Carbone both broke their own records in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200-yard IM, respectively, while the GU men took down the 200-yard freestyle relay record.
 
TEAM RANKINGS
  • Georgetown's women currently sit in second place with 266 points, trailing only Villanova (330). The Hoyas hold a commanding lead over Xavier (201) and Seton Hall (172). Providence (106) and Butler (105) round out the standings.  
  • On the men's side, the Hoyas are fourth with 234 points, but are just 12 points out of first place. Xavier and Villanova are tied atop the standings with 246 points while Seton Hall (237) is third. Providence (112) trails the Hoyas.
 
HOYA WOMEN  
GEORGETOWN MEN
  • Sherman got the Hoyas off to a great start in the 500-yard freestyle, breaking his own record with a time of 4:22.63 to win his second-straight title in the event.
  • Carbone continued the momentum in the 200-yard IM as he also broke his own school record. He touched the wall in 1:46.10 to win by more than a second. Michael Baldini was also on the podium as he finished third.
  • In the B Final of the 200 IM, Connor Morikawa just held off a late charge to take the top spot.
  • Jack Calderwood tied for first in the B Final of the 50-yard freestyle, earning big points for the squad.
  • Joseph Hofman was fourth after the prelims of the 3-meter diving, but scored a 260.1 in the finals to jump up to third.
  • The relay team of Carbone, Calderwood, Baldini and Sean Devlin shaved .60 seconds off the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:21.43, finishing third.
 
COMING UP NEXT
The BIG EAST Championships will continue on Friday with the 400-yard IM, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, women's 3-meter diving and 400-yard medley relay.
