EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team gained ground in both the men's and women's standings, setting nine program records and winning four gold medals on the third day of the 2020 BIG EAST Championships, presented by Jeep on Friday at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.
HOYA WOMEN
- Phoebe Slaughter, who broke her own record in the morning prelims of the 400-yard IM in 4:23.23, placed third in the A Final just ahead of her teammate Alexandra Robertson. Corey Moon placed seventh while Ryan Evangelista won the B Final.
- In the 100-yard butterfly, Lauren Henasey took fifth while Gabriella Meringolo claimed eighth.
- Belinda Donohoe and Lauren Rutledge placed sixth and eighth, respectively, in the 200-yard freestyle.
- Samantha Kim finished sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke A Final, just after Megan Smith won the B Final.
- In the 100-yard backstroke, Grace Chen won the women's first swimming gold in two years as she just outstretched a pair of opponents in a time of 55.85 seconds. Alexandra Rieker finished sixth.
- Riley Fujioka completed the sweep in the diving events as she cruised to a win in the 3-meter event. She broke her own record in the prelim with a 303.10 before finishing with a 574.65 to win by 47 points. Elizabeth Miller finished third ahead of Naomi Peng and Margaret Barnhorst in fourth and fifth, respectively.
- The relay team of Chen, Kim, Henasey and Donohoe took third in the 400-yard medley relay in 3:47.91.
GEORGETOWN MEN
- Brett Sherman opened the night by breaking his own record in the 400-yard IM as he placed second in the A Final with a time of 3:52.01. Carlson Temple placed sixth.
- Michael Baldini put himself into the GU record books in the 100-yard butterfly, placing sixth in the A Final in 48.92 seconds.
- Sean Devlin tied for sixth in the A Final of the 200-yard freestyle, while Sean Percin touched the wall first in the B Final.
- The Hoyas had four swimmers in the A Final of the 100-yard breaststroke. Connor Morikawa, who set the school record in the morning prelims with a 54.67, re-broke his mark with a 54.51 to finish second. Nathaniel Goldfarb took third while Temple placed fifth and Matthew Szilagyi tied for seventh.
- Drew Carbone broke his 100-yard backstroke record twice on Friday, en route to winning his second-straight title in the event. He swam a 47.75 in the morning prelim before shattering that with a 47.18 in the final to win by 1.41 seconds. Henry Hollinsead and Jack Calderwood finished 1-2 in the B Final to pick up valuable points.
- The relay squad of Carbone, Morikawa, Baldini and Devlin shattered the 400-yard medley relay record by nearly four seconds, winning easily in a time of 3:13.71.
