Georgetown Finishes Second at 2020 BIG EAST Championships

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team finished a competitive 2020 BIG EAST Championships presented by Jeep on Saturday night as both the men's and women's squads finished second. The Hoyas won 11 gold medals and set 19 program records over the four-day meet at the Nassau County Aquatic Center.
 
HOYA WOMEN
  • Corey Moon started the evening off with a strong race in the 1,650-yard freestyle. She touched the wall in 16:56.49 to claim silver while Noelle Fimbres finished seventh and Ryan Evangelista took ninth.
  • Phoebe Slaughter won GU's second-straight silver as she stormed back from sixth at the midway point to place second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:01.22. Evie Mauze placed seventh.
  • Belinda Donohoe lowered her time from the morning prelims with a 50.78 in the 100-yard freestyle to claim third. Lauren Rutledge also made it to the podium with sixth-place finish.
  • Alexandra Rieker earned Georgetown's fourth medal of the evening as she took third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:20.34. Megan Smith placed seventh.
  • Cristina Barrett finished fourth and Gabriella Meringolo touched in seventh in the 200-yard butterfly.
  • The relay quartet of Rutledge, Slaughter, Alexandra Robertson and Donohoe placed third in the 400 freestyle relay.
 
GEORGETOWN MEN
  • Matthew Braviak took eighth in the 1,650-yard freestyle.
  • Drew Carbone set the BIG EAST Conference record in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:42.11, a mark that broke the eight-year-old conference mark by .62 seconds. Brett Sherman placed fifth, while Matthew Braviak and Henry Hollinshead took seventh and eighth, respectively.
  • Sean Devlin won gold in the 100-yard freestyle as he tied his record time from the morning prelims with a 44.93. Sean Percin and Jack Calderwood also raced in the A Final, placing seventh and eighth, respectively.
  • In the 200-yard breaststroke, Connor Morikawa became the first Hoya to break the two-minute mark as he finished in 1:58.20. He led for the majority of the race but was just out-touched at the wall. Carlson Temple placed fourth, while Nathaniel Goldfarb took seventh.
  • On the diving board, Joseph Hofman claimed his second bronze of the meet in the 3-meter dive, while Griffin Edmonds placed fourth and Matthew Werner took seventh.
  • The relay team of Devlin, Baldini, Percin and Carbone won the final event of the meet as they touched the wall first in a GU record time of 2:59.05.

BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES
  • The Blue & Gray won 11 total gold medals over the meet and set a total of 19 new program records.
  • Carbone was named the BIG EAST Championships' Male Most Outstanding Swimmer for the third-consecutive year after winning three individual gold medals and two relay titles.
  • Riley Fujioka was named the Most Outstanding Women's Diver of the Meet after sweeping both the 1- and 3-meter diving events.
  • Head Diving Coach Marc VanDyken earned BIG EAST Women's Diving Coach of the Year honors.
