Steve Thames Jr. Joins Football Coaching Staff

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University Football Head Coach Rob Sgarlata has announced the addition of Steve Thames Jr. to the coaching staff. Thames arrives on the Hilltop after coaching the past five seasons at the NCAA FCS level after playing for four years at the University of New Hampshire. With the Hoyas, Thames will work with the team's wide receivers.

"I'm very excited to be joining the staff as the receivers coach," Thames said. "I can't thank Coach Sgarlata enough for the opportunity. I am from the area and am just very excited to be back home doing what I love to do. Can't wait to get going and work to impact these young men's life in a positive way."
 
COACHING CAREER
  • Thames spent the last two seasons at Fordham working with the defensive backs, outside linebackers, and returners (2019) and the defensive secondary (2018).
  • Last season, the Rams ranked second in the Patriot League in kickoff returns, averaging 20.9 yards per return. They were third in punt return average at 8.5 yards per return.
  • In 2018 he helped mentor Dylan Mabin who was an All-Patriot League selection and went on to play for the Oakland Raiders. In 2019, linebackers Glenn Cunningham and Ryan Greenhagen were both named to the All-Patriot League First Team.
  • Prior to Fordham, Thames spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons coaching at Dartmouth, working with the running backs and returners (2017) and the wide receivers (2016).
  • Dartmouth finished 2017 ranked third in the Ivy League in rushing, averaging 180.0 yards per game. Thames helped mentor All-Ivy League selection Ryder Stone who went on to be selected by the Montreal Allouettes in the Canadian Football League.
  • In 2016, Thames helped mentor Ivy League Rookie of the Year selection Hunter Hagdorn as a wide receiver.
  • Thames broke into collegiate coaching in 2015 as defensive intern on the James Madison coaching staff, working with the secondary and helping lead the Dukes to a share of the Colonial Athletic Association crown. There he helped mentor future Green Bay Packers safety Raven Greene.
 
PLAYING CAREER
  • Thames played for four years as a defensive back at the University of New Hampshire.
  • In 46 games, he recorded 122 tackles and seven interceptions, returning three for touchdowns.
  • He helped UNH reach the FCS Playoffs in each of his four seasons, winning CAA titles in 2012 and 2014,
  • As a senior in 2014, Thames earned All-CAA honors.
