Georgetown Drops a Close One to Providence in BIG EAST Tournament

CHICAGO – The Georgetown University women's basketball lost a close one to the Providence College Friars 49-46 in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep Brands on Friday afternoon at Wintrust Arena in Chicago.  The Hoyas battled back to come close, but could never find the go-ahead bucket to finish the season with a record of 5-25 overall.

How it Happened
  • Both teams struggled to score early on with PC hitting a trey and graduate student Taylor Barnes matching on the other end.
  • Providence got hot late in the period and fouls allowed the Friars to lead 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The second was much of the same as Barnes tallied a pair of 3-pointers as well as two free throws.  Wright added a pair of free throws late in the half.
  • Despite the slow scoring, Georgetown was solid on defense trailing 20-16 at the half.
  • Providence tried to pull away, but five quick points from graduate students Brianna Jones and Barnes cut it to five 35-30 at the end of the third.
  • The teams battled through the fourth quarter as GU chipped away at the lead.
  • The Hoyas made it a one-possession game on a number of occasions, but couldn't find the run they needed late.
  • Despite a big trey from Barnes as well as a put-back from senior Anita Kelava in the closing seconds, it was not enough as GU fell 49-46.

Of Note
  • Barnes led the way as the lone Hoyas in double figures with 24 points in the game.
  • Kelava scored eight points and pulled down a squad-high 11 rebounds to go along with four blocks.
  • Georgetown shot 19.0 percent from the field hitting 12-of-63 shots, while the Friars managed 36.2 percent hitting 17-of-47.
  • The Hoyas held the 44-39 advantage on the glass, and GU committed just nine turnovers while forcing 18 by PC.
