Georgetown Field Hockey Wins at VCU

Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – The Georgetown University field hockey team beat Virginia Commonwealth University in its Sunday afternoon matchup with the Rams. The Hoyas improve to 7-6 (1-3 BIG EAST) on the season, and VCU moves to 8-4.

"Today we focused on trust and connection, and getting results," said head coach Christy Longacre. "We didn't have many opportunities today, but we took advantage of the ones we did have. Defensively, we stood strong against against an extremely tough and skilled VCU. We never doubted each other, and we backed each other up, trusting in our ability to fight and not give up. I'm super proud of this team for continuing to battle and keeping their eyes forward."


How it Happened

·         The Hoyas and the Rams were scoreless through the first half. VCU attempted 11 shots during the second quarter, but Georgetown thwarted all the attempts and headed into halftime tied 0-0.
·         Late in the third quarter, freshman Sophie Town found herself on a breakaway down the field. One-on-one with the goalkeeper, Towne slipped a shot past VCU's Sasha Elliot to score for the Hoyas. Georgetown headed into the fourth with a 1-0 lead.
·         VCU kept up the offensive pressure in the fourth quarter, putting up eight shots in the final period. The Rams attempted six penalty corners, but Georgetown's defense held strong. The Hoyas walked away with a 1-0 victory.
 
Of Note

·         The Hoyas were outshot 24-7 by VCU, but Georgetown managed to score the lone goal of the match. VCU put 10 shots on target.
·         Towne scored her fourth goal of the season, making her the leading goal-scorer for the Hoyas. Towne has scored in three of her last four games with Georgetown.
·         Goalkeeper Ciara Weets added 10 saves to her season total in the shutout win. This marks Weets' fourth shutout of the year.
