Hoyas Fall to Lafayette At Cooper Field

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team dropped Saturday's contest to Lafayette, 24-23, despite a career afternoon from wide receiver Joshua Tomas

ON THE RECORD

  • "I am extremely proud of our entire program. This was one of the best Patriot League games I have taken part in.  All of the Patriot League games are four quarter battles and this one went down to the last play.  We are not satisfied with just being in close games.  Our expectation is to win each and every time we take the field.  We will regroup and build on our positives, correct our mistakes to improve for our next outing.  I love this group and how they play for the man next to them. I am looking forward to taking the field next week against Fordham with our team" said Georgetown Head Coach Rob Sgarlata

KEY STATS

  • Tomas set a career-high in receiving yards, registering 137 on the afternoon to go along with a touchdown. His longest reception of the day went for 41 yards in which he tallied his lone score. The senior wideout reeled in seven of his nine targets, averaging 19.6 yards per catch.

  • Ahmad Wilson recorded his first interception of the season and fourth of his career with his first-quarter pick.

  • Pierce Holley paced the game with 231 passing yards and a touchdown while completing 19 of his 30 throws. Eight of his 19 completions went for 15 yards or more.

  • Ibrahim Kamara set a career-high in sacks with two against Lafayette.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Georgetown kicked off the game by moving the chains twice over the first five plays before a 41-yard pass over the middle from Pierce Holley to Tomas lifted the Hoyas to 7-0 lead.

  • On the ensuing kickoff, Georgetown surprised Lafayette with a successful onside kick, recording its first of the season and first since Sept. 28, 2019, against Columbia. The Leopards staved off the Hoyas' threat and held the home squad off the board.

  • With just under five minutes to go in the first, Joshua Stakely capped off a seven-play, 36-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run to give Georgetown a 14-0 edge following an interception by Wilson.

  • The first quarter ended with the Hoyas up, 17-7, after Conor Hunt sent a 24-yard field goal through the uprights and Lafayette scored on a rushing touchdown by Selwyn Simpson.

  • Five minutes into the second, Georgetown's special teams blocked its second field goal of the season, this time off VeRon Garrison's hands and marking the team's first block since Justin Fonteneaux on Sept. 11, 2021, against Delaware State.

  • After the Leopards scored its second touchdown of the game and pulled to within three, Georgetown's Hunt booted a 31-yard field goal with 1:20 remaining to put the Hoyas up by six, 20-14, at halftime.

  • The second half began the same way the first half ended as Hunt nailed his third field goal of the afternoon, a 38-yard strike to put the Hoyas up by two possessions, 23-14. With 12 ticks remaining in the third quarter, Lafayette pulled to within two, 23-21, on its second rushing score of the day.

  • The Leopards took its first lead of the contest with 5:31 left in the fourth on a 28-yard field goal and eventually knocked off Georgetown, 24-23.

  • The Blue & Gray will return to Cooper Field on Nov. 6 for Senior Day and its final home contest of 2021 when Fordham comes to town. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.
