WASHINGTON – The Hoyas celebrated senior day with a 3-1 win over the University of Richmond on Sunday afternoon. Georgetown finishes the season with a 10-8 record (3-4 BIG EAST) and places fifth in the BIG EAST for the 2021 field hockey season.
How it Happened
· The Hoyas began the first quarter with an aggressive offensive mindset. Georgetown outshot Richmond 4-0 in the quarter and had three penalty corners. The Hoyas capitalized off a corner with just over two minutes remaining in the period after
Ali Cronin fed a ball to
Abby English. English set the ball for
Emma Street, who took a strong shot on target and scored. The Hoyas led 1-0 after one period of play.
· Richmond answered with 11:19 left in the second period, finding an equalizer to tie the game at 1-1.
· Georgetown would not let the score remain tied for very long. Off another penalty corner, the Hoyas found the cage to take a 2-1 lead. English set the ball again, this time for
Sydney Stephenson who sent a shot across the middle of the scoring circle.
Halle Gill redirected the ball right behind the Richmond goalkeeper for her first goal of the season. The Hoyas maintained the lead going into the half.
· After a scoreless third period, Georgetown put the nail in the coffin during the fourth quarter of this Halloween matchup. With 8:30 left in the game, the Hoyas pushed their lead to 3-1. Stephenson took another shot after receiving a pass from Cronin's penalty corner, this time deflecting off a defender and into the cage. Georgetown would go on to win after fending off six shots by the Spiders in the final 15 minutes of play.
Of Note
· With her two assists in the game, Cronin moves up to third all-time in assists for the Hoyas. The fifth-year senior finishes her Georgetown career with 24 assists, nine of which came in the 2021 season.
· Stephenson finishes as the team-leader in points after scoring and assisting in today's game. Stephenson had five goals and five assists for 15 total points.
