Football Drops Season Finale to Morgan State, 28-21

BALTIMORE – The Georgetown University football team fell just short of a comeback against Morgan State, falling, 28-21, in its season finale at Hughes Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

ON THE RECORD
  • "Last game of the year is always tough, especially this year with the fifth-year seniors and seniors. It's a great crew," said Head Coach Rob Sgarlata. "There are guys that stuck with us and helped us build this program to being one that is going to compete for a Patriot League title in the future. Tyler Knoop came in and we knew he was talented when he came in and had a breakout day with 13 carries for over 100 yards. It gave us a spark on offense. Joe Brunell is the kind of player you dream of coaching. A fifth-year senior that won the starting job, lost the job and then came back into the starting job. He played today and threw the ball extremely well for over 260 and fought through an injury late in the first half on that touchdown drive. There were a lot of bright spots, but we did not finish on the scoreboard. This is a gateway game for us into the offseason and we will continue to work with our young players. We are excited to get into the spring and start to reload everything into a normal year."

OF NOTE
  • Knoop also recorded his first touchdown and 100-yard rushing game of his career. The junior quarterback registered a 55-yard rushing score up the middle while racking up 122 yards on 13 carries.
  • Knoop's 122 rushing yards are the most in a game this season.
  • Asante Das scored his first touchdown of the year on a 42-yard strike from Brunell. The wideout finished the game with a season-high 78 yards on five receptions.
  • Brunell finished the game completing 24 of his 40 passes for 262 yards with two touchdowns.
  • Jovone Campbell led the defense with six tackles while Ahmad Wilson followed up with five of his own.
  • Cameron Crayton secured his fourth touchdown of the season with a 14-yard score in the fourth. The Hoya wide receiver reeled in five receptions for 62 yards.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After both clubs were held off the board on their respective first possession, the Hoyas capped a four-play, 54-yard drive with a 42-yard pass from Brunell to Das.
  • Georgetown fooled the Bears with a fake PAT and scored on Richie Pinomi's two-point rushing conversion for an 8-0 edge.
  • After stopping Morgan State on its next drive to open the second quarter, Knoop found a hole up the middle and took off for a 55-yard touchdown to give the visiting team a 14-point lead.
  • The Bears scored two touchdowns in the second following the Knoop score, however, they missed the extra point on a muffled hold to send the game into halftime with a 14-13 Hoya advantage.
  • Neither team scored in the third quarter, resulting in a combined three punts.
  • Morgan State grabbed its first lead of the game in the final frame, scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns to take a 28-14 lead.
  • The Hoyas nearly mounted a comeback in the final two minutes, going down the field in 39 seconds with a four-play, 79-yard drive finished off by a Crayton 14-yard receiving score to pull Georgetown to within seven, 28-21.
