WASHINGTON – The No. 3 seed Georgetown University men's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to pick up the 2-0 victory over the Georgia State University Panthers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday morning at Shaw Field. With the win, Georgetown improves to 17-2 on the season and advances to the NCAA Round of 16, while Georgia State finishes the 2021 campaign with a mark of 13-7.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "We played really well today and at halftime we knew we had done everything we hoped to do except statistically except score. The first goal today was going to be massive and, despite all of the chances we had, it was Aidan Rocha blocking a shot when it was still 0-0 midway through the second half which could be the defining moment of the game because it then allowed us to get the goals down the road and put us through to the Sweet 16."
How it Happened
- Georgetown controlled possession early in the game as the first chance came from leading scorer Stefan Stojanovic who had a look from six yards out that went wide.
- GU continued to push as a shot from sophomore Kyle Linhares went wide. This opened the floodgates as the Hoyas continued to press but shot after shot was blocked.
- With 14 minutes left in the first, it was junior Dante Polvara who hit a laser from distance that clanged off of the left post as GU searched for the back of the net. Neither team would find it as they went into the break in a scoreless tie.
- Georgetown pushed in the second dominating the possession, however, it was Georgia State that had the best chance as an open shot was cleared by senior Aidan Rocha to keep it scoreless.
- The 70th minute is where it changed as senior Joe DaLuz was on a breakaway on the left side. He was taken down in the box resulting in the Polvara penalty kick which he buried to make it 1-0.
- The Blue & Gray would add another in the 70th minute as senior Sean Zawadzki hit a long ball to sophomore Chris Hegardt on the right side. Hegardt skillfully dribbled past his defender and crossed to the senior Zach Rivere who hit a perfect strike to make it 2-0.
- Despite some late chances, Georgetown would hold on for the 2-0 victory, advancing to the NCAA Round of 16.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot Georgia State 18-7 and the Blue & Gray had eight shots on goal to the Panthers' six.
- The Hoyas were awarded 10 corner kicks, while Georgia State had four on the day.
- Nikopolidis took the win and the shutout with six saves to his credit, while Gunther Rankenburg was given the loss with six saves in goal for the Panthers.
- This will be the eighth appearance in the Round of 16 for the Blue & Gray.
