Georgetown Wins BIG EAST Regular Season Championship

WASHINGTON – The No. 4/5 Georgetown University men's soccer team won the 2021 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship on Wednesday on the heels of a 1-0 victory over the University of Connecticut Huskies to wrap up regular season play at Shaw Field. With the win, the Hoyas improved to 14-2 on the year and finish league play with a mark of 8-2. The title also secured home field advantage and a first round bye for the Blue & Gray for the upcoming BIG EAST Championship which is scheduled to begin this weekend with first round games.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
"Winning this league, especially this year when we are such a strong conference, is a huge accomplishment. Doing it on Shaw and having a perfect home record throughout the regular season was a goal of ours and to do it without any ties was great for this group. The league wasn't won or lost today, it's over a run of all 10 games and we had some great moments throughout the table. Even how we lost the two games, being able to respond is what wins you the league more than anything else."

How it Happened
  • Georgetown controlled the pace, but it was UConn (7-7-2, 2-6-2 BIG EAST) with the best chance early as a shot from the top of the box forced GU keeper Giannis Nikopolidis to dive to his right and make the save with his hands.
  • On the other end of the pitch, the Hoyas sent balls in but only looked dangerous on setpieces as a free kick from Dante Polvara was saved by keeper Jahmali White.
  • The 41st minute opened it up for the Hoyas as Polvara sent it to the far post and senior captain Sean Zawadzki sent it back across the goal. It found freshman Ronan Dillow who buried it for his third goal of the year and to give GU the 1-0 lead going into the half.
  • UConn opened the second half with a chance forcing Nikopolidis to make the save.
  • The Blue & Gray would then take control as GU continued to attack the UConn goal.
  • Georgetown would have chances, but the second goal did not materialize.
  • In the final minutes of action, UConn pushed everything forward resulting in some scary moments in front of the net. But the Hoya defense stood strong coming up with huge blocks to hold on for the 1-0 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot UConn 11-6 and the Blue & Gray had six shots on goal to the Huskies' three.
  • The Hoyas were awarded seven corner kicks, while UConn took one in the match.
  • Nikopolidis took the win with three saves to his credit as well as the shutout.
  • The Hoyas have now earned the top seed in the BIG EAST Championship for three-consecutive seasons.
  • This is the seventh regular season championship in program history. Georgetown was also the top seed last season, but a regular season champion was not crowned due to the unique schedule.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas stay at home for the BIG EAST Championship semifinal game on Thursday, November 11. Kickoff is scheduled 11:30 a.m. at Shaw Field. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on Flo Sports and live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
