Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Georgetown Falls to Washington in NCAA Semifinal

CARY, N.C. – The Georgetown University men's soccer team could not find the tying goal as the Hoyas fell 2-1 to the University of Washington (18-2-2) in the NCAA semifinal on Friday evening at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. The Hoyas had chances, but could not unlock the Husky defense late to end the season with a record of 18-3-1.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "I'm incredibly proud of our performance, it was a really hard match and, being in the second semifinal, it was really hard to wait a full hour for kickoff and I think the guys handled that really well. When you play a team like Washington, it can go a ton of different directions and I think we did a fantastic job limiting what they were trying to do for the first 45 minutes and to say that about an opponent like Washington is a real tribute. But the downside is that, until the goals pushed some urgency into our guys, we wanted possession but we played the game in the middle of the field and we needed to be in a more dangerous position."
How it Happened
  • Both teams managed spells of possession through the first 20 minutes of action with each registering a shot.
  • As the game settled in, it was Washington that had control as the Hoya defense was forced to make plays to keep the Huskies from good chances.
  • In the 35th minute, a perfect cross from junior Stefan Stojanovic freed senior Zach Riviere who saw his shot go just wide of the far post.
  • A late flurry of shots produced nothing as the teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.
  • The game changed in the 54th minute when a service into the box was sailed just over the leg of a defender and into the back of the net at the far post to make it 1-0.
  • Just three minutes later, Washington was on the offensive again and had the Hoyas on their heels. Charlie Ostrem hit a strike from the top of the box that was perfectly placed inside the post as the Huskies went up 2-0.
  • The Hoyas kept pressing, and in the 80th minute, the Blue & Gray got on the board when freshman Kieran Sargeant served a ball to the back post finding the head of Zach Riviere. The senior finished confidentially into the back of the net to pull the Hoyas within one.
  • Over the final 10 minutes, the Hoyas searched for the equalizer. Riviere was almost the hero as his shot in the box sailed over the crossbar and the Blue & Gray eventually fell 2-1.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Washington 6-5 and both teams managed just two shots on goal apiece.
  • The Hoyas were awarded five corner kicks, while UW had three on the day.
  • Senior Giannis Nikopolidis took the loss with no saves, while Sam Fowler was awarded the win with just one save in the match.
  • For his efforts, Riviere was named to the College Cup All-Tournament Team.
Recap
The Hoyas end the season with a mark of 18-3-1 on the year advancing all the way to the national semifinals. Along the way, GU won the BIG EAST Regular Season Title as well as the BIG EAST Championship. The Blue & Gray boasted three All-Americans and two MAC Hermann Semifinalists.
