Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 3/2 Georgetown and No. 22/19 Seton Hall Play to Double-Overtime Draw

WASHINGTON – The No. 3/2 Georgetown University men's soccer team tied the No. 22/19 Seton Hall University Pirates 1-1 on Saturday afternoon in double overtime at Owen T. Carroll Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the draw, the Hoyas move to 4-0-2 on the season and the same in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Pirates sit at 6-1-3 overall and 4-1-2 in league play.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "This was two teams playing for first place. There was not much to it and I think we did enough to win, but we conceded too many set pieces to a team that is really good on set pieces. Them scoring on one is not surprising at all. It was a typical BIG EAST brawl and getting out of there with a tie, getting the point is a job well done but it's certainly never satisfying when you miss out on three points. I was happy with the way we fought, but we were unlucky not to get the winner in the end.
How it Happened
  • It was a quiet first half for both sides as the chances were few and far between.
  • Senior Hoya keeper Ethan Koehler was tested once, coming up with a huge save for the Blue & Gray in the 37th minute.
  • Without a dangerous chance for Georgetown, the teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.
  • Seton Hall had a good look early in the second period which went high, while senior Jacob Montes hit a left-footed shot in the 61st minute with some space that went right of the goal.
  • In the 62nd minute, Georgetown turned up the pressure as a free kick from senior Derek Dodson from the top of the box clanged off of the right post as GU was just inches from moving ahead.
  • The Pirates had a chance in the 72nd minute when a long ball bounced to the foot of Mattias Sundell who had a wide open net. His shot was wide as it stayed tied.
  • Georgetown would go ahead in the 74th minute as a shot from freshman Kyle Linhares was saved, but the rebound went to a charging Dodson at the far post who sent it back in to make it 1-0.
  • Just seven minutes later, a Pirate free kick on the left side went to the far post and Eden O'Leary got his foot on it to redirect it up and in tying the contest at one apiece.
  • Late chances would not be enough as the game went into extra time.
  • In overtime, the teams shared the momentum and both had opportunities sail wide as the game resulted in a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of action.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Seton Hall 18-14 with five on goal to SHU's seven.
  • The Hoyas were awarded nine corner kicks to the Pirates' four in the game.
  • Koehler managed six saves on the afternoon.
  • The contest was GU's fourth overtime game this season. Georgetown is 2-0-2 in extra time.
