Hoyas Fall to Creighton in BIG EAST Tournament

UNCASVILLE, Conn. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team put up a good fight, but fell short 56-42 against the Creighton University Bluejays on Friday evening in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. With the loss, the eleventh-seeded Hoyas close out the season 2-15, while the sixth-seeded Jays advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament with a record of 8-10.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "I thought the girls played hard tonight, but we didn't finish our shots. We had 59 attempts, and they (Creighton) were efficient with 44, but they went to the free-throw line 29 times which made a huge difference. I was happy we made that run and thought we'd be able to cut back into the lead but we had some breakdowns that kept us from getting it back. But overall, I'm proud of the girls and the fight they've shown all season."
How it Happened
  • The first quarter was low scoring as both teams battled on defense. Creighton his a pair of triples, but five late points from junior Shanniah Wright gave the Blue & Gray the 11-10 advantage at the end of the stanza.
  • Georgetown would score first in the second quarter, but early free throws and back-to-back triples late in the period from the Bluejays gave CU the 21-15 advantage and forced a Hoya timeout.
  • Out of the timeout, freshman Jazmyn Harmon had a bucket roll in but Creighton would answer as the Hoyas trailed 23-17 at the half.
  • The Bluejays opened the second half with five-straight points and forced another GU timeout. It was junior Jillian Archer who sank the triple and then traded baskets with the Bluejays as GU tried to keep it close.
  • Looking at a 12-point deficit, freshman Kelsey Ransom converted a traditional three-point play and then took a charge resulting on a trey from Harmon on the other end as Georgetown pulled within six and forced a Bluejay timeout.
  • The Hoyas were fired up as Archer converted the three-point play and Wright had a putback to cap off an 11-0 run to pull GU within one 36-35. Creighton would hit one free throw late to make it 37-35 at the end of the third.
  • Wright was active in the paint with a pair of buckets in the fourth, but Creighton continued to find an answer at every turn.
  • The comeback would never come for the Hoyas as Georgetown eventually fell 56-42.
Of Note
  • Wright led the way with 11 points, while Ransom and Archer managed 10 apiece.
  • Archer and graduate student Taylor Baur each pulled in six rebounds, and Ransom tallied four steals to go along with three assists in the game.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 28.8 percent (17-59) and allowed 29.5 percent (13-44) shooting by the Bluejays.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded 42-31, but had just 10 turnovers to CU's 13.
