Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 2/2 Georgetown Downs UConn, 5-1

WASHINGTON – The No. 2/2 Georgetown University men's soccer team put together a solid performance in its regular season home finale with the 5-1 victory over the University of Connecticut Huskies on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 6-0-2 on the season and the same in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Huskies sit at 1-6-1 overall and 0-6-1 in league play.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "The guys really showed up to play today, Dante's incredible finish set the tone in the first minute and, for Senior Day on Shaw, this was a special day. This group is 35-3-5 in their career on Shaw Field so it's wonderful for them to go out in this fashion. It was great for Montes to score two goals in his last game and I think this group has really set the standard for our program. Today's win sets us up for our finale at St. John's and with each game getting more and more important this was a great way to wrap a bow around the senior class and what they've done."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas got on the board in the first minute of action as a touch from senior Jacob Montes went to sophomore Dante Polvara at the top of the box. Polvara hit a good strike and sent it past keeper Jahmali White to make it 1-0.
  • Georgetown controlled the pace and continued to fire on the UConn defense.
  • In the 13th minute, freshman Chris Hegardt found Polvara on the left who managed to send it through to a charging Paul Rothrock. The senior redirected it in to make it 2-0.
  • Throughout the rest of the half, Georgetown was dominant with 12 shots and little to worry about on the defensive end.
  • In the final minutes of the period, UConn battled for its lone shot as GU keeper Giannis Nikopolidis dove to his right to make the stop as the Blue & Gray went into the half up 2-0.
  • The Hoyas would open the scoring early in the second as a shot from Polvara from 30 yards out sailed in to make it 3-0.
  • A foul just outside the box gave Montes the opportunity for a free kick from a favored spot. The senior didn't disappoint sending it to the far post and in as Georgetown took the 4-0 lead.
  • Seven minutes later, Montes put an exclamation point on his career with a shot from 25 yards out that hit the crossbar and went in as GU had the 5-0 advantage.
  • UConn would find the back of the net in the 68th minute, but that would be the last of the scoring as the Hoyas cruised to the 5-1 victory.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot UConn 26-5 with 11 on goal to the Huskies' four.
  • The Hoyas were awarded 13 corner kicks to UConn's two in the game.
  • Nikopolidis and senior Ethan Koehler combined for the win managing three saves on the afternoon.
  • It marked the final game on the Hilltop for Montes and senior Rio Hope-Gund. Montes will be departing for a tryout in Europe, and Hope-Gund has been called into preseason camp with Orlando City of Major League Soccer.
Up Next
  • The Hoyas will close out the regular season schedule on Saturday as the team travels to New York to battle the St. John's University Red Storm in the regular season finale.
