Hoyas Fall in NCAA Quarterfinals

CARY, N.C. – The eighth-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Marshall University Thundering Herd Monday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament at WakeMed Park in Cary, North Carolina. With the loss, the Hoyas conclude the season with a record of 10-2-2, while the Herd advances to 12-2-2 overall.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Congrats to Marshall on a great performance, they're a good team and really difficult to play against. They don't allow a lot of easy chances and it felt like both teams had just a few and they capitalized. In a funny way, we kind of ran out of time at the end. But I'm so proud of this group for how they handled everything over the last year. Not training in the fall, coming back in January and having to be socially distant. Handling losing three All-Americans in the middle of the season and still getting to the Elite 8 and were playing their best soccer of the year. I couldn't be prouder of this group of players and we have a lot to look forward to next season."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas controlled play early with a number of chances, but nothing on target.
  • The first real look came off of a Marshall free kick which went right to GU keeper Giannis Nikopolidis who knocked it over the crossbar.
  • The Herd would have another look in the 36th minute which was easily collected by Nikopolidis, and Georgetown continue to push forward searching for the first goal of the match.
  • It would not come in the first half as the teams went into the half in a scoreless tie.
  • The first chance in the second came off of a free kick from sophomore Dante Polvara whose low shot went into the hands of Herd keeper Oliver Semmle.
  • It was Marshall that cracked the code first as the team took the ball across the box and to the endline before firing to the back post where an awaiting Jamil Roberts stood alone and was able to redirect it in to make it 1-0 in the 70th minute.
  • Just two minutes later, junior Sean Zawadzki had an opportunity off of the corner kick, but his header sailed just wide of the post.
  • Georgetown sent waves of Hoyas forward and a header from junior Zach Riviere looked to be it in the final seconds, but the equalizer would never develop as the Blue & Gray eventually fell 1-0.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Marshall 7-3 with two on goal to the Herd's three.
  • The Hoyas took five corners to MU's two.
  • Nikopolidis took the loss managing two saves on the afternoon.
